So yeah, I am an IDM fan but I'd dismissed the album generally because the minimalism initially struck me as uninspired and boring.

But listening back to it, there seems to be more going on regarding the ambience. Sure, the synths are great. But it got me thinking - it was recorded on tape, right? How much credit of the "ambient quality" of the album lies in the mere fact that it's recorded on tape?

I think id still sound great. It wouldn't sound as warm or fuzzy. It's not idm either.
>>
Xtal is still the best IDM song even if the rest of the album isn't particularly outstanding
>>

>not idm

How?

I wouldn't say it makes it ambient but it definitely adds to the charm. WIth pic related they went to great lengths to achieve the same effect. They recorded themselves playing, bounced it down to vinyl, played the vinyl over and over to wear it down, then bit-crushed it through a sampler.
>>
>>62971381
Wait, holy shit, really? Source?
>>
>>62971299
It's more ambient techno imo. Although you could say that falls in into idm.
>>

There's more to IDM than shitty breakcore anon.

I take "literally retarded" for $10, Alex.
>>
>>62972403
Tracks like Green Calx set the formula for IDM in the 90s. "IDM" was only beginning to emerge in the early 90s

>>
>>62972364
Thanks man!

ambient techno as a genre is not part of idm
some experimental ambient techno comprised early idm (such as autechre's early stuff, arguably saw 85-92) or at the very least heavily inspired it (again arguably saw 85-92)
there, now there likely doesn't need to be more discussion of it
>>
>>62972403
to be fair wasn't the term IDM what warp used to market their music
>>
>>62972364
This is incredibly unbelievable. What's the book called, btw?
>>
>>62976521
yeah, pretty much
it's less a genre and more a movement originating from warp with a bunch of musicians that shared a common sound and general progression of their styles through the 90s, which in turn influenced other electronic musicians to replicate that sounds
it would really be better off being called the Warp Sound than anything
>>
>>62976601
I am not this guy so I can't say for sure, but if I had to guess it is probably part of the 33 1/3 series
>>
>>62976617
>Warp sound

I like it
It subverts the debate about newer artists like FlyLo or OPN being IDM as well, which is nice.
>>
>>62973062
Breakcore isn't IDM either, despite what that retarded RYM site says
>>
>>62977110
a good chunk of it is
>>62977080
thing is is that flylo definitely doesn't have the sound of the famous 90s warp artists and while opn seems pretty influenced by them I think it's doing his music a disservice to say it's derivative of it, to me it sounds like it comes from a completely different place
I guess a more proper name would be 90s Warp Sound, though if I were to call it something more academic-sounding I'd say 90s British Post-dance Experimentalism

>90s British Post-dance Experimentalism
>>
>>62977621
yeah, that's why I said academic, it manages to sound even wankier than intelligent dance music, but at the very least it's more accurate
>>
>same arguments every fucking time

jesus wept, just start ambient techno or breakcore threads and never mention the words ''IDM'', ''braindance'' or similar ever again
>>
>>62977683
but then you get people asking why it's not called /idm/ and posting stuff that isn't idm
last time it was called electronic listening music the thread had people talking about grimes and churches
>>

this is why I never start threads anymore, for anything

why don't you guys go to /bleep/? they do discuss idm at least
>>
>>62977964
>>a thousand posts of "howdy pardner"

Dunno how /bleep/ managed to get a consistent repetitive general where all the regulars are happy enough and knows what the common trait and genres are but these all fail
>>
>>62977998
only very occasionally but its 99% current club music which is cool, thats what its for
>>
>>62977998
they don't at all, they just want to listen to 'real dance music', which is fine but then they shit all over non-dance electronic music
>>62978004
it started out as a last.fm thing I believe, so it already had a community before it really became a general here
>>
>>62976681
Yeah it's the Dummy 33 1/3, it's like 3x the size of the rest of them for some reason
