So yeah, I am an IDM fan but I'd dismissed the album generally because the minimalism initially struck me as uninspired and boring.
But listening back to it, there seems to be more going on regarding the ambience. Sure, the synths are great. But it got me thinking - it was recorded on tape, right? How much credit of the "ambient quality" of the album lies in the mere fact that it's recorded on tape?

I think id still sound great. It wouldn't sound as warm or fuzzy. It's not idm either.
Xtal is still the best IDM song even if the rest of the album isn't particularly outstanding

I wouldn't say it makes it ambient but it definitely adds to the charm. WIth pic related they went to great lengths to achieve the same effect. They recorded themselves playing, bounced it down to vinyl, played the vinyl over and over to wear it down, then bit-crushed it through a sampler.

ambient techno as a genre is not part of idm
some experimental ambient techno comprised early idm (such as autechre's early stuff, arguably saw 85-92) or at the very least heavily inspired it (again arguably saw 85-92)

it's less a genre and more a movement originating from warp with a bunch of musicians that shared a common sound and general progression of their styles through the 90s, which in turn influenced other electronic musicians to replicate that sounds

thing is is that flylo definitely doesn't have the sound of the famous 90s warp artists and while opn seems pretty influenced by them I think it's doing his music a disservice to say it's derivative of it, to me it sounds like it comes from a completely different place
