To be honest. Only ones that trump them are King Crimson and Can (Kraut, but still...)

King Crimson has the more diverse and better run in 69-81. Can has some great stuff, but really falls behind the curve after their trilogy. Just like Yes.

In my opinion though, Gentle Giant, Amon Duul, Neu, and
The Mars Volta
are some of the all time best prog bands. (Yes, I know some have variations).
>>
>>62956740
And by trilogy stuff like.

Can's Trilogy:
Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days.

Yes' Trilogy:
The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close to the Edge.

King Crimson:
Anything from 69-81 is god-tier.

Don't forget Comus.
>>
>>62956819
OH yeah. They are fucking great Progressive Folk(?)
>>
>>62956740
>The Mars Volta
I actually totally agree with you
Frances the Mute is a fuckin crazy record
>>
>>62956859
Yeah. They have some great prog records on their hands during the 2000's which is unbelievably hard to do in this day and age without being rehashed. Unlike Steven Wilson's camp...
>>
>>62956852
Folk Rock, yeah. Some of those tracks are fucking heavy.
>>
>>62956922
Yeah, I never got Wilson or Porcupine Tree, Hand Cannot Erase was pretty bad and so is most of his work.
>>
>>62957010
The reason why his work isn't all too great is because they sound like a tame Tool (Another worthless band) and he keeps saying he wants to bring back the spirit of Progressive Rock, but the problem with that statement is that all his music sounds too clean. Look at Crimson's work in the 70's. There is some raw edge that they insert into their music. Same with Yes to a certain extent.

LOVE WILL FIND A WAY
>>
>>62956740
king crimson r far apart in quality from yes desu and ctte trumps everything kc have ever done

and i dont rlly count can as a classic prog band but their obv the best

oh yea gentle giant is a strong contender to

tmv is garbage tho
>>
>>62957154
Stop writting like an autistic child.
>>
>>62957082
Yeah, production is way too light, nothing hits hard on most of his records, guitar is too clean, which isn't always a bad thing but it sounds awful and cliche.
>>
>>62957154
KC > Yes > TMV > Can

all are great though, I feel bad for anyone who has to call everything they don't like garbage
>>
>>62957236
For me it's KC > Can > Yes = TMV

I just listened to TMV for the first time recently, they're great, though I still like At the Drive-In more for the most part.
>>
>>62957300
Which album did you listen to? De-Loused is great but Frances the Mute is where the group really peaked, not sure why most TMV fans prefer the former.
>>
>>62957300
Can > KC > Yes = TMV here. whats your fave KC that isnt Court?
>>
>>62957327
So far both De-loused and Frances, Frances being my favorite of the two. Yeah, I don't get why it gets more acclaim from fans, to me Frances is the best by a fair margin.
>>
>>62957383
ITCOTCK > Red > Islands > Discipline > Lark's Tongue > ITWOP > Starless and Bible Black > Lizard > Three Of A Perfect Pair

the rest are mostly solid but not memorable enough to rank based on the number of listens I've given them
>>
Per un Amico > CttE
Also, the best moments from CttE are the first vocals from the intro, and that "circular" melody with the bass and all that stuff

KC > Henry Cow > Can > Faust > Yes
>>
>>62957383
Lark's Tongues > Red > Starless > Discipline=ITCOCK

I haven't listened to their other stuff enough to judge, but I love what I've heard
>>
>>62956118
1 good album.

henry cow are great but more theoretical than can/kc and not as listenable.

ok

>>62958002
I've listened to their full discography several times through, their self titled and western culture are my favorites, so I'll admit War is a pretty fucking catchy song

Did I ever say I didn't like HC? I ranked them fourth behind behemoths like can and king crimson.
>>
>>62957584
>>62957710
really? do u guys not even like AHM and Ummagumma?
>>
>>62957934

you mean
Yes = KC > Gentle Giant > > Soft Machine > Van Der Graff Generator > Gong > Jethro Tull > Mike Oldfield >Gabriel-era Genesis > Supertramp > Floyd > Rush > ELP >Kansas >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>ELO
>>
>>62958114
The decrease in quality became apparent out of the absence of Syd.
>>

>>62957934
kc wherent dat good most off the time wereas hc made genuinely challenging music dats actually also fun 2listen2 imo but not in a mallgoth lol so wacky way obv

srsly tho is there another prog band as undeservedly overpraised as king crimson? they where often just terrible
>>
>>62958152
>they where often just terrible

You can say that about a lot of prog bands but KC at their worst were still OKAY
>>
>>62957934
revision because I forgot a lot
can > faust > kc > henry cow > motw/kayo dot > genesis > gong > soft machine > vdgg > gentle giant > il balletto di bronzo > univers zero > camel > pfm > jethro tull > pink floyd > yes > pt > rush
>>
>>62956118
They never did anything as good as Close to the Edge.
>>
>>62956445
Actually, the meme is that they're not prog.
