All of these "general atrocities" required some elements to make them believable. They don't require massive government cover ups, large scale administration of diseases and a ominous entity to keep people quiet. This is why the conspiracy theory.

The problem with this theory is that big pharma in the US doesn't spend a whole lot of money on research anymore. They're essentially big marketing firms pushing the drugs they already have the rights to distribute. They'd rather buy a drug that relieves itchy toes then spend millions on commercials to convince you that you have itchy toe syndrome then risk losing money on a cure they might not find, especially if they have no intention to market it.
