Yes, but that doesn't mean it's good. Western culture is in a tailspin right now and hip hop is sitting right next to the pilot.
Hip hop became popular by appealing to lowest common denominator. It gave the idiots of the planet everything they always wanted in music: recycled pop melodies from songs they already liked, violence, trendy slang, and most importantly, the false illusions of power, money, sex, and talent.
It is a genre fueled by plagiarism and consumerism, and best of all, no technical ability or musical knowledge is necessary to participate. Anybody can do it, you just need to have the image and egoism.
The only thing that surprises me about hip hop's cultural success is that it didn't get more popular sooner.
