It's that kind of music that feels at once familiar and alien. Love how Kanye is always able to sneak in very outré musical ideas into what are otherwise pop songs. It's very subversive stuff, very clever. Arthur Russell and Mr. Fingers samples? Yes please.
Also since I hear no one talking about it -- I love the final artwork. The "which / one?" thing is super clever on so many levels: "Picasso or Escobar -- or the Apostle?" "The hot new piece of ass or the family?" "The old Kanye or the new Kanye?" "The leader or the demagogue?" "The genius or the crazy person?" These are themes that pop up throughout the album, which tends to deal in confusion and contradiction. The aesthetic of the cover is also great. For those of you complaining about the sloppy and haphazard MS Paint/Windows 98 look, well that would appear to be the intent. This sort of digital nostalgia is big in the art world right now. I was just at the art book fair in LA and this aesthetic was all over the place. I like it, it's like a new lo-fi for the millennial age. Another example of Ye using his popular platform to push very avant ideas. It's like the antidote to our focus grouped, crowd-sourced times.

I'm hoping Yeezy takes the extra week before the official album release to do more tweaking. This album could have been something really special if he took more time with his lyrics.
Remove Freestyle 4 and Feedback. Imagine 'Waves' with more than one verse with lyrics more like Ultra Light Beam. Imagine Wolves with the Vic Mensa/Sia parts (which we'll hopefully get soon). Imagine 30 Hours if he actually rapped for the last 2 minutes than adlib shout-outs and take a phone call.
Imagine how good this album would be with consistently good lyrics. :(

Anyone else think the lack of cohesion is both the best and worst thing about Pablo? It doesn't exactly feel like an album to me except in the beginning and end (ULB/Father Hand Stretch and Real Friends/Wolves are great pairs), yet I also think most of the individual tracks are great in themselves, they just don't fit together as a package
oh yeah and the lyrics are garbage more often than not unfortunately but the highlights like the four songs I mentioned save the others

First listen was offputting but after the 10th I'm really loving it
But honestly, the most depressing thing is the production. TLOP just lacks that certain...precision that a Kanye West album has.
Going back through it and looking at other Kanye songs/albums, I think the biggest thing is that the vocal tracks (ESPECIALLY Kanye's own vocal tracks) tend towards the raw side. They're not really incorporated with the music anymore, even when he's using autotune.
MBDTF is the opposite in that regard.
Beyond that, it just feels like ... 18 tracks that everyone besides Kanye gave their 100% on. Like, the fact that Chance, of all people, was the one who delayed the album to include/improve Waves speaks volumes.
It's like he took the communal feeling of MBDTF but extended too far, so that now everyone else is invested in perfecting the album but he doesn't have to be. It might create a decent album (Yeezus) but it can also create a truly non-Kanye album (TLOP).
