I'm really impressed with how pop music manages to straddle the line between being fun, engaging pop music while also having elements of outside influence and artistry in there as well.
I actually think this may be due to how music critics have responded to pop music in the last few years, when they realised a 21 year old's garage rock band was not even close to same level of artistry as a pop song made by seasoned songwriters.

Lots of decent musicians write pop songs. Every good successful pop song, was written by a decent musician. Being a decent musician isn't necessarily based on how many obscure musical theory techniques you know, but how good of a song creator you are, basically can you make good music?
What I dislike about modern pop is how bland the instrument choices are. It's all just electronic keyboard sounding shit and then youll have some of the more baritone sounding string instruments from the violin family.
