But actually, it's a heartbreaking album, with some fantastic lyricism and while not having many instruments, compared to Illinois, the guitar and banjo are beautiful in it.
It isn't boring at all. If you want super interesting go listen to Adz or a lie bootleg of one of the shows on this tour. It works very well in the context of Sufjan's work and even better if you've ever lost a parent. It's also just fucking beautiful.
Sufjan is gay and boring. I respect that he's a good musician, but I will never understand why people can enjoy his music.
This album was a fucking masterpiece and perhaps one of the most consistent albums I've ever heard. Best album of 2015 and feelsiest album of all time imo

I'm in between the two extremes here. On one hand, I do think it's a very good album, one of Sufjan's best, and is obviously very well-done. At the same time, I have a few problems with the conception of the album itself.
Basically this: C&L is an incredibly PRETTY album. It's clean and beautiful, there isn't a hair out of place - it is, if I were to be reviewing it, TOO nice. For an album that is about the death of a parent, but also the abusive and traumatic relationship with that parent - ostensibly both very not-nice and not-pretty things - Sufjan chose to put out a very subdued, quiet, calm, and "pretty" album.
It sounds good. It's obviously very good. I just see this weird disconnect between the obvious explicit subject material and emotion, and what it actually sounds like. When I think of a singer-songwriter song about death, I think that Sun Kil Moon's "Carissa" is the gold standard (of recent music, anyway) - it's hoarse, it's rough, it's imperfect, and it's ugly in places, just like death, just like dealing with death.
So, while I'm incapable of denying the fact that C&L is incredibly well done, I honestly can't push past a few deep-seated conceptual problems with the album. And, as a concept album (basically), I think having problems with how the concept is presented and orchestrated is totally valid.

You're right, and that's a criticism of my point that I'm aware of and accept. I just wish we could feel some more of the acceptance process, instead of starting out that way. Doesn't he say "mother I forgive you" in the opener? I feel as though making the album more of a journey to acceptance, starting out shakier and growing towards "mother I forgive you", could have proven to be a better album.
As always - it's a good album. It's a contender for best dead-mom album ever. I put it on my record player and cry sometimes (cuz I'm "gay and boring").
