thinking about getting the Mx40's, heard some reviews that said the 50's and 40's get uncomfortable after wearing for a while. what's your experience?
>>
I've got Sennheiser HD598s.
They sound great, but in all honesty I can't tell any difference when I use an amp, it just sounds like it got EQ'd or something.
>>
>>62393322
that's cause they don't really need an amp, only to fix the cans' impedance peak at around 100Hz, but the amps need a low enough output impedance.
>>
>>62393322
the effect an amp has on the sound of a headphone is really overblown until you get into some of the super high end top of the line headphones, and even then it doesn't apply to all of them.

its a headphone it takes milliwatts to make blow your ears out loudness.

I rip all my CDs to Flac but VBR Mp3 has come a long long long way, its pretty hard to tell the difference. 90% of everything in your setup is the Transducer the box you put it in and the room you put the box in. thus my top heavy budget

Interesting. I'm a newcomer to the audio realm past headphones.
Would ripping CD's to flac increase the quality of the files? Do you run it through some sort of something to clean it up and then transfer to flac or vbr?

>>62393268
I own a pair of ATH M50S and they do get clammy after wearing them for more than 45-60 minutes. you just have to twist the cups so they aren't covering your ears for a minute or two and then the clamminess goes away
>>
I have ATH-M50 at work, and HD598 and MDR-V6 at home. The ATH-M50 are my favorite.
>>
>>62395982
nope. Flac is a method of compressing audio into a smaller file size without losing any data at all. so it perfectly maintains the quality of the CD but reduces its impact on your hard drive space. if the CD is dirty clean it with a lint free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, if its scratched and you are lucky enough to have a store near by that offers CD buffing id recommend that for a better shot at an error free rip.

i use a program called Exact Audio Copy or EAC to rip to Flac.

no unfortunately the opposite, the Senns have less bass because they are open, its hard to get an open back to go as low as a closed back because having that closed cup helps pressurize the air. what the senns do have is better everything else.

maybe it is a jumping point but grado is the wrong place to start at any point. they're a garage company that sells cheaply built stuff at economic to premium prices. this stuff isn't even sophisticated as the design is a transducer stuck in a small small tube held together with a steel wire and hotglue. the ergonomics are primitive, the sound is thin as the headphones lack subbass and the build is something you can do with a drill press or a hole saw for a power drill in your garage.

and they pass themselves off as hifi

>they are cheaply made
which is why they are affordable. notice i put the 60s and not the 325s

there just isn't a whole lot of great headphones at that price point. you could go with the Koss Porta Pro which is also cheapo as hell and is only praised because its as cheap as it is, or the AKG K 240 i guess for a similar price, but thats more of an entry level studio monitoring headphone than a casual listening headphone and there is a difference.

all grados are cheaply made. the difference is hotglue and woodglue. considering how close they all sound, I'd even say their transducers are the same throughout all models. maybe the high level ones get more quality control

For on the go listening with my iPod classic I got myself some xiaomi piston 2s. Didn't believe my buddy that they were good at the price point but they sound almost as good as my old Klipsch S4s. Can someone explain to me what the point of an amp or any other device you can use with your computer? I have no clue what any of that means. I just plug my headphones into my computer and all is fine.
>>
>>62404824
Simplest way I can put it..
Your computer is basically an amp. The headphones you use are fine with your computer as an amp. Bigger headphones need more power, your comp cant supply that power so you need an amp to supply that power.
