I'll admit I haven't gone through Steely Dan's catalog since I really haven't liked what I've heard so I could be wrong there. Def Leppard though? It's lowest common denominator hair metal. That doesn't mean it isn't enjoyable, but it's bizarre to hold up their singles as 'great'

That's where you're wrong. The lowest common denominator hair metal is Poison, not Def Leppard. At least Def Leppard has great songs like Photograph and Pour Some Sugar on Me. But even the worst of Poison is better than the best of Florence + The Machine, The Strokes, or Ellie Goulding.
