Name a single album/piece from 2000-2015 that will stand the test of time. You simply can't.
808's and Heartbreak
if you can't see that, you're literally retarded.

haha yea right. it will be remembered as an interesting concept that pushed some boundaries but it isn't an album that sticks with someone for a long period of time.
cLOUDDEAD - cLOUDDEAD
Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You
the Microphones - The Glow Pt. 2
Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein
all just from 2001
>>62045110

You're an idiot.

what exactly is the "test of time" ?
to be played on Classic Rock Greatest Oldies Goldies Hits radio?
then I guess some shitty band like The Black Keys

Out of everything posted so far this one might have some weight to it, if we're talking about an album that was unique and heavily influential, yet also remained underground and respected throughout the years.
>>62045135
>You're an idiot.
definitely not the case, even if i'm right or wrong about that album. tell me why you disagree that 808s was an interesting concept that pushed some boundaries and consider that we're talking about an album by a mainstream artist that got heavy mainstream support. i doubt you will.
>>62045004
Almost all of the albums posted in this thread sound too similar to artists of the past to stand the test of time. Even if they're good, you can clearly trace their roots and influences from other already mainstream acts.
>>62045215
>pet sounds
lmao
>>62045351
I can't prove a negative. YOU tell me what is interesting and boundary pushing about 808's.

madvillainy
12 years and it still hasn't aged at all
If we're gonna take off our internet goggles for a sec.
Probabably screamo as a whole too and jazz

>It's notated too.
Barely though.Usually it's just played off lead sheets which usually only give the melodic theme and harmonic structure.
I mean, there's rock music that was scored first too like a lot of Frank Zappa's stuff but it'd be weird calling that art music.

Mozart's 41st: the fourth movement demonstrates a total mastery of sonata form in how Mozart not only is able to create all the immediately recognizable themes inherent to the form but also twist them together into a 5-part fugue at the end of the work. the other movements are as good as the rest of his late work which is to say perfected.

>>62045821

>>62046679
Nice ad hominem.
>>62046527
>no, that would be Sgt. Peppers
You say that as if it's a fact. To my knowledge there hasn't been a reliable survey of all noteworthy popular music critics to see which album they think is the best.
But you're absolutely right those bands who have albums which share similar accolades that demonstrate Pet Sounds is a significant album are also generally considered significant.
>>62046587
You're pretty vague here about which songs you mean. Tell me which you don't include in those other songs along with GOK and I'll try and give you an explanation of one.
>>62046679
He's right though, the only thing it pioneered was recording techniques like putting songs together rather than cliche fade outs. Its hardly a feat of transcendent composition. It was well put together and decently well written but it didn't change the way music was written, only how it was presented, and even then needed help from the Beatles...
>>62046786
dude, does Pet Sounds ever top one of those shitty lists major publications make? Sgt. Pepper and DSOTM are objectively the most "well known" to be the greatest album ever.
:v)
>>62046897
Several publications have deemed it "the greatest album of all time", including NME,[15] The Times,[16] Mojo,[17] and Uncut.[18] In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it second on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
>>62047055
>>62046897
Oh, and also albums like A Love Supreme are also popular music too. As far as serious music criticism goes, that's probably got more acclaim among academics than DSOTM and possibly Sgt. Pepper too.
It's hard to tell when you're talking about stuff this high up because there isn't any decent data on what the general consensus is.

Caroline No is my second favourite on the album behind God Only Knows so may aswell go there.
The chord progression is pretty fantastic, listen to all the 7ths and 6ths he uses, the whole thing gets this jazzy but also bittersweet feel to it that supports the theme of reminiscing over lost love and youth. That and the weird non-diatonic chords which give the piece a pretty ambiguous tonal center mean that the emotional intent of the song is pretty ambiguous too and there isn't ever really any strong sense of resolution like there is in a song like God Only Knows which is written with similar harmonic devices but which allows for resolution in the chorus.
The melody is also gorgeous, loads of big interval jumps and the delivery is just magical. It's so longing and in the way that makes a lot of the Pet Sounds material outstanding, All the musical ideas feed into the lyrical ideas. Brian has this really dorky and adorable demeanor that makes the way he delivers such a sincere ballad really endearing. It's not as flash a song as GOK but if you can get into the sappy emotion of the song, it's incredibly affecting.
