It's pretty amazing how Marilyn Manson and him both were in a similar place in the 90's but Trent managed to have the foresight of seeing that this sort of life wouldn't be able to last.
Trent now has a strong proffesional career and seems to live a happy life, while Manson is fat and unimportant.

Trent has even admitted that tweaking with sound is what he is really good at, lyrics and singing is not his forte. Some of the strongest NiN songs are pure instrumentals imo.

I think he mellowed a bit with age. That's why recent NIN (The Slip and onward) has sounded lukewarm.
I think he has matured as a composer also. His recent film soundtracks and ambient works have consistently been pretty excellent as well, imo. Just not in the same way as The Fragile or Downward Spiral.

As a Skinny Puppy fan later converted NIN fan, I gotta disagree. Skinny Puppy's music doesn't at all capture the emotion/anger of Trent's early work, nor the "tell your parents to go to hell and I am the God of Fuck" edginess of Manson's work. Skinny Puppy's music is wholly industrial and their songs, for the most part, are about corrupt systems or the apocalypse (Grave Wisdom, Far Too Frail, Assimilate, Dig It, etc.)
So they're not THAT comparable to NIN. Yes they inspired Trent but that's all, his music (other than Down In It) was never trying to imitate their stuff.
