Someone made a post in some earlier thread about how having the internet and everything readily available at everyone's fingertips has made it difficult for anyone to really achieve that status anymore, and also that the way the industry is at the moment is also preventing it.

This.

Rock stars were able to become larger than life figures because we didn't know where they came from / their personal history.

If you mean the specific rock genre, its because its mostly played out. It sounds silly but its all been done in terms of standard rock.

Frankly I'm glad the whole rock star thing is dead as it caused millions of people to idolize people like Axl Rose who was just as fake as the average popstar. Oh and Kurt Cobain sure he's real and he's indie but lets face it Nirvana was never a great band, good sure and Smells like Teen Spirit is a great song but he could never make an album not marred by lesser tracks.

Because now rock isn't as commercially successful. Most of the talent follows the money, so only really dedicated rock bands don't get sucked in.
All 'wrong generashun' crap aside, I do think there will be a big rock revival in the next few years. There are way too many people who still prefer 60s-70s music for the industry to continue forever the way it's going, we just need a new band with real talent that can't be seduced by the money to rise up and claim the throne.

you realize GNR was only relevant for literally 5 years right?

in fact Appetite didnt even succeed when it first released in 1987, it wasnt till they released Sweet Child O Mine, then got Geffen to re-release the album a year later in 88 that it took off

so from 1988 to 1991, not even 5 years and here we are 25+ years later and people will still recognize Axl or Slash
>>
>>61972603
Well rappers are the hottest thing now, just like Rock was. People treated Rock back in the early days like Rap now. I know it's kinda obnoxious when Kanye or ASAP Rocky compare themselves to Elvis and say they're the new rockstars but they're right.

There will always be some sub popular scene going on that's second to pop and making people divided on it until it becomes excepted, only to be replaced by another thing.

Whether it's Jazz, Rock, Punk, or Rap.

I think one of the reasons why is that rock musicians today just aren't that outspoken or rebellious. They don't cause controversy. Hip hop/rap artists, in contrast, do. Eminem has insulted countless people and entities in his songs. Kanye gets a lot of hate from people for his stunts at the Grammies, thinking so highly of himself, and probably some other stuff too yet he's one of the most popular artists in music today. Now these artists are not just built on controversy alone. They obviously have talent and skill as shown by their music. However I do believe that it still helped them get to where they are today.

That's what rock needs today. It needs a rebel. And it's going to get one at some point. It's happened before. Hell that's practically what rock and roll is built on.

You can't get away with trashing hotel rooms anymore like 60s/70s/80s bands did because now most hotels require you to have a credit card so they can charge you if you try to skip town without paying damages. You used to be able to just drop cash for a night, but thanks in part to bands like them, that is no more.

The point I'm making is that "bad boy" rock star types aren't around much anymore because people don't put up with that kind of shit now. There are probably numerous reasons for this but people don't think rock stars should be able to get away with that kind of thing just because they're famous anymore. Back in the 70s people thought it was cool when Led Zeppelin partied hard, but not as much now. Like it or not, people want their rock stars to be "nice guys" like Dave Grohl now.

Nah, rock just reached the end of its shelf life. All the good riffs have been used. Seems like all genres of popular music have a commercial shelf life of 50 years. Jazz was '20s to '70s. Rock was '50s to '00s.

If I knew that I'd be making music right now. I'm guessing it's going to be some form of electronic music (not EDM per se). In the same way that hip-hop started in part because inner city youths couldn't afford instruments, electronic music is going to become big because it's the cheapest and easiest way to make music today.

I love rock music but I just don't see it becoming culturally relevant again. Rock needs to become sexy and dangerous again for that to happen. What would that even sound like? It can't sound like any of the sexy dangerous bands of the past, because most kids don't want to listen to their dad's/granddad's music.

Rock seems like music for old people because all the iconic rock groups got old.

Same thing will happen to hip hop. Ten or fifteen more years max. Dub step and EDM seem to be fading out so there more like disco that rock or hip hop in terms of impact. Really not sure what will be big next. Maybe nothing. Maybe people will all just listen to local music made by their cousins and shit and bit global music icons will be a thing of the past.

When was the last time that a proper rock song or band was really relevant in the mainstream? I'm thinking QOTSA or Foo Fighters back in 2006ish, or maybe RHCP with Stadium Arcadium. Granted I haven't really been a music geek for years so there might have been something more recent.

Rock will come back. These things are cyclical. It became too ubiquitous, too popular. People are bored with it, and when Jack White is trying to sell you coke, why wouldn't they be.

But, it will be back, like everything does. People are even listening to Phil Collins unironically again.

1) All the rock songs have already been written. Rock is dead. It's been done. All the songs and genre developments have reached a conclusion. Anything now would be treading old ground and would never sound as exciting.

2) The internet has lead to a slight broadening of music. More independent musicians are making a living than ever before, and independent music is more fashionable, therefore discerning music fans won't be looking for mainstream options.

3) The cost of touring is now prohibitive. Rob Swire of Pendulum said he chucked it in because he wasn't making ends meet. If a band at that level can't make it work, then I guess most can't. The increased costs are due to labels making less on albums due to internet piracy "HURR THE BANDS MAKE ALL THEIR MONEY TOURING", who the fuck funds the tours, then? The labels. And if they ain't selling albums, then they ain't funding rock band tours. So called music fans killed band tours. Nice one everybody.

4) The consolidation of record labels. There used to be a much larger number of mid sized record labels, but they have mostly been consumed by the big 3. This means that profits are now driven by the lowest common denominator effect, where the market is most profitable catering to the most homogenised lowest acceptable standard of product, which is your Pop Idol/X Factor type bullshit.

There you have it.
>>
>>61979613
I think there is still stuff to do with Rock, it's just that nobody cares enough to do anything. I'd say modern music is kinda boring because nobody cares about innovating, but I doubt that's true and I don't even listen to that much modern stuff.

When was the last time someone invented a new genre, though?
>>
>>61979697

I would argue that the last new genre was bro-step.

>>
>>61979789
>worshiping white trash icons instead

>>
>>61979743
>completely new genre
It isn't possible.

"New genres" always has roots in previous genres & music made the past decades.
Metal is based on hard rock, blues, psychedelic rock, etc.
Black was basesd on thrash.
Punk was based on 1960s garage, psychedelic rock, glam, etc.
the list goes on.
>>
>>61979743

But that's how all genres develop, like a branching tree.

Well you could say dubstep then.

That was the last new genre. Which was just an offshoot of garage, which was just an offshoot of hip-hop, which was just an offshoot of disco, which was just an offshoot of baroque pop.

But if you don't think rock is dead then try to think of a new way of doing rock. It's all done.

Make it distorted? Thousands of metal bands.
Make it ambient? Post-rock.
Make it long-form? Prog.
Add electronics and sounds? Industrial metal.
Bring it back to basics? 90s indie.
Combine it with dance music? Dance punk.
Combine it with ethnic music? New wave.
Combine it with noise? No wave.
Combine it with hip-hop? Rap rock.

There's nowhere, nowhere at all for it to go. Rock is dead. Dead, dead, dead. Done. Dusted. In fact I'd argue that all popular music is basically dead and now we're just filling in the few gaps, the tiny few remaining gaps between genres, but I guarantee that there's to be no real musical progression from here on in. Get used to it.
>>
>>61979801
That's kinda what I meant. I'd say metal is a genre and rock is another, but math rock is just a form of rock.
>>
>>61979806

I may get hate for this viewpoint but i believe its accurate.

those who said the internet killed the rockstar is correct.

if there would have been a modern rockstar it would have been taylor momsen and the pretty reckless. here me out before you stop reading

they are a post grunge butt rock band, which in the 90's would have killed it. they had 2 number 1 singles in 2014/2015 and have were on the road for almost three years straight

yet barely anyone knows them or care - but this would be the quintessential rock band to have taken over. but because there's no such thing as album sales, and no singular presence outside of pop/club music stars and remixes- there's literally nothing except them to hope to make money on tours.

before you say its cuz they are generic or not that good - that is irrelevant - those types of bands were leaders in late 90's -2000's .

they would be like the foo fighters - but the foo fighters set it all up pre-internet explosion

Because of the Illuminati pushing degenerate/satanic messages in mainstream music nowadays (aka Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber). If you want to get in as a rockstar nowdays you have to have tons of luck, but then you can fuck up this illuminati system from the inside. Beware though, people like Jeff Buckley were killed for it.

The indie scene got big so people started to have their own preferences in rock music and its subgenres since its easily available.
