Just marathoned the first two tracks, is the whole album like this? When does it get good?

the first track is one of the best tracks of all time, so if you don't like it already you have a hard time ahead of you (I mean life, not the rest of the album)

This album just sounds horrible to me. Sounds like a bunch of random notes played with no rhythm.

I don't know what people see in it. Do you like it just because you think it's "different"?

Part of the beauty of the album is laughing at it, and then afterwards getting the music.
You probably won't "understand" all the tracks the first time through.
an open mind is a must to get this album.

>>
>when does it get good

Alright you little shit, let me tell you what the deal with TMR is. If you go in expecting to be blown away by crazy and beautiful music you'll be sorely disappointed. This album doesn't sound anything like the overproduced indie garbage your used to. It's not ethereal, it doesn't particularly envelope you, it's not an album from the 2000s that's for sure.

What you need is an open mind. Get rid of any expectations, any trolling and shitposting. Forget about scaruffi, forget about every dipshot on /mu/ who either said it's the best album ever, or worst album ever.

Listen to it and hear all the rhythms. Hear how the guitars overlap, or don't. Hear the bass and how it doesn't have anything to do with the rest of the song. Listen to Beefheart sing out of tune and out of sync with the band. Hear him pour his heart out into completely nonsensical lyrics. Listen as the guitar parts change tempo and key without flinching.

Think: someone recorded this and they thought it was good. Maybe you don't like it, that's fine. It wasn't recorded for you to like it. It exists. After listening to it several times the melodies will get stuck in your head. The bad will sound good. The nonsense will make sense, or at least you will think so. Embrace the contradictions. Embrace how off everything sounds.

the album is fantastic. from a technical stand-point it's outstanding. in terms of musicianship it's outstanding. in terms of pure, unfiltered originality and genius on behalf of Don Van Vliet, it's outstanding. In rock music there has never been anyone such a genius, and there may never be again. Don Van Vliet was just one of a kind. The type of person born once in a thousand years. >>
>>61965250

When I first tried to listen to this album I thought it was shit. Then I kept on listening and I still thinks it shit but I started to get used to it's smell, it's texture and it's disgusting nature. Trout Mask Replica is not album but rather the anti-album. The whole point of Trout Mask Replica and some of Captain Beefheart's other work is the fact that's it's horrible noises. The album is music stripped down to a primitive and mindless form. That's what makes it amazing. It's a very "naked" album. The album is moronic when you're listening to it but amazing in retrospect.
>>
>>61971571
You know from an outside perspective it is immediately apparent that almost all of you enjoy this album to some degree because people on /mu/ or other people who you respect told you it was good and that you didn't initially enjoy it until other people told you that you should.
>>
>>61971697
Actually I enjoyed it on my first listen. I was jamming and bobbing my head to Ella Guru.

>>
>>61971828
No, Safe as Milk is pretty good too
>>
>>61971791
If you hate an album, a bunch of people tell you that it's good, listen to it again and still don't like it, see more people tell you it's good, then listen to it a third time and now you "like it" you probably just like it because other people told you to. That's a thing you know, an authority figure can make a person shift their perception of reality to align with that authority even if that sentiment didn't emerge in the individual in any organic manner.

>>61971834
>everything is a meme

Yeah man I don't subscribe to your generation z bullshit. Peppering an opinion with the word memes to trivialize the topic is not something I think makes any fucking sense.
>>
>>61971879
I'm not trivializing the topic.
I'm just saying that the hype about pretty much any work of art could be viewed, as you say "from an outside perspective" as a bunch of people who don't know what they're talking about, parroting the opinions of people who sound like they do.
>>
>>61971828
>>61971843

>>
>>61971973

>>
>>61972042
It's a fantastic album so it gets discussed a lot. Get over it.
>>
>>61972077
No it's not. Most people here admit that they really disliked or even hated it on their first listen. No one who hates an album goes back to listen to it because they just felt like it, someone told them to do it or made them insecure for not liking it.

I see that on /mu/ all the time/.

From my outside perspective it is immediately apparent that most of you like this album because you were either told to, or made insecure for not liking it.
>>
>>61972042
A lot of things about TMR are absurd.
It's like any music though.
You can listen to it and form an opinion about it.
And /mu/ memes a lot of acclaimed albums.
I discovered TMR before /mu/, so I just think it's a funny album with some interesting music on it.
Totally wasn't surprised to find out it was a meme on /mu/ though.
>>
>>61972132
Back in the day, most people only kept listening to this album because Frank Zappa produced it. It's kind of the same effect, so I don't know why you're here hating on us
>>
>>61972132
That's ridiculous.
If it is true, it's their fault for letting /mu/ bully them.
>>
>>61972132
Indie /mu/ drones are insecure so they force themselves to like avant garde. It has nothing to do with the actual music.
>>
>>61972180
>funny album

I really don't hear that concept applied to other albums or artists, it really feels as if that's another excuse for pretending to like a shitty album.

>>61972195
I'm hating on you because most of those same people pretend that liking this album makes them better than other people who don't.

What this does, is it perpetuates praise of an album that most of you only like because you are told to, the people that don't like an album that you admitted "I hated it the first time I listened to it", are now to be mocked because you got on the in crowd of people who will say they enjoy it while they didn't.

This board really feels like a cliquey high school with a bunch of people just being fake to fit in and it really is making me think that the majority of this board is actual high schoolers.

i assume that for many /mu/tants tmr was the first avant garde music after listening to indie rock, classic rock or top40 their entire lives. When you grow up thinking that this is what music has to sound like, of course you hate tmr.

I'm sure someone with a Jazz/Blues background has no trouble getting into trout mask replica after the first listen.

It's a deconstruction of rock music that came out in '69. When rock music was still considered a burgeoning genre. And Beefheart reduced it to its primal elements and reassembled it in such a manner that makes you question why a rock album even "rocks" in the first place. The fact that this album was released in the same time-frame as derivative tripe like The Doors' Soft Parade is absolutely mind-boggling.

Even without this context, the micro-melodies and poetic banter are mesmerizing. It's disorienting and discomforting at first -- but give it enough time, enough conditioning, and you'll form your own context around this album to appreciate its uniqueness.
>>
