Happy New Bass Day to me
>>

Did you cum on your strings?
>>
>>61931927
The strings are rubber, not steel.
The bass has a piezo bridge on it, so what the strings are made of doesn't matter as long as it vibrates.

Tele or Strat?
>>
>>61931949
Also as a result of the rubber strings, there's practically no tension on the neck, so it doesn't need a truss rod. As a result, the bass only cost $400 new.
Also that picture doesn't show it, but this thing is about 3" shorter than a normal guitar and weighs 2 pounds.

Ashbory Bass.
Fretless bass with silicone rubber gasket cord for strings.

Is this thing seriously 400$ ? Fretless doesn't even take more work to build, you could buy a used squier, defret it yourself and swap the pickups and end up with a better sounding result.
>>
>>61932210
> Fretless doesn't even take more work to build
Yeah, especially when it's a plastic fretboard
>>
>>61932016
Because there's no need to.
The piezo element doesn't care what the string is made of as long as it vibrates, and lots of things vibrate at bass guitar frequencies.

>>61932049
People asked about it, dipshit.
That's why I'm talking about it.

>>61932088
That's $400 for a fretless bass with multiple unique parts and tooling, active electronics because of the piezo, and selling at full retail.
If you think that's a lot for a decent bass you need to find a job.

>>61932127

Except it's not nowhere near decent for that price : 18" scale, made of agathis and plastic, piezo pickups, silicone strings
It's a cool toy at best but other than that, i fail to see the point of having one of these.
>>
>>61932106
If you're using a different string gauge that will give you the exact same tension in your new tuning, no.

If you're using the same strings then yes, you will need to loosen the spring tension slightly to keep the bridge level.

I'm betting it'll have all sorts of QC issues at this price if it's an all tube head.
If it doesn't, that'll be impressive. Hopefully retailers won't take ages to start selling them where I live.
The 1x18" subwoofer seems really interesting though.
>>
>>61932289
That's all you need. It's smooth as can be, the silicone strings aren't going to wear it out, and plastic is both more temperature stable and cheaper to boot.

>>61932299
>tonewood matters on an instrument equipped only with a piezo
Nope.
Plus, you don't have to worry about your fretboard not being smooth.

>>61932312
>it'd look better in a more conventional size and shape
Perhaps, but they tried that already and it didn't sell.
It's already a special snowflake guitar-if you're going to own one, you might as well embrace the flakiness. Besides, the weird shape and short scale length lends itself very well to playing while sitting on the couch or in a chair. Much more so than a "regularly" shaped electric bass.

>>61933387
You're not wrong.

Laminates feedback a lot less. I like thinline archtops because they give you the plugged in sound of a full body archtop without the huge body. They're just comfy instruments. They definitely don't sound as good acoustically though. A Gibson Byrdland is basically a thinline shortscale L5 and it sounds great, even unplugged it's not bad.

Given a choice I would still play a full depth 17" archtop though, but that's only because I like my guitar to be loud acoustically.

Maybe I'm biased. I like a very specific sound I've heard in jazz guitar, which is that little percussive bit at the beginning of notes like Joe Pass or Tal Farlow got. I've never heard a thinline get that sort of Joe Pass' Joy Spring percussive "thunk" sound, much less the almost offensive levels of that percussive element that Tal Farlow got. Seems like a sound that only comes from ES-175s, ES-125s, ES-350s, and Gibson Tal Farlows, all big, hollow, laminate archtops.

Yeah, and he was using an ES-330 there which is about as thin as it gets. I used to have an Epiphone casino that could nail that sound, for me the secret to that sound is a rosewood/ebony bridge + thick flatwound strings.

Thinline es-175s are pretty rare, but sometimes you can find thinline ES-125s that have been modified for humbuckers and you can get them for way cheap and you can't beat a 1950s Gibson.. I'm looking for one myself to replace the Casino.

Working on a track with a couple of friends, very basic home recording. Looking for comments/feedback on the mix. It's all raw tracks right now besides a small amount of reverb on the vocals, no EQ yet, and an empty section towards the end where a solo will be.

So far I know I'll have to tame the bass back quite a bit on the primary guitar track.

Not true. Unless you set your guitar head to sound like a bass head, low notes aren't inherently harmful

8 and 9 string guitars are a thing. Octave down pedals are a thing

>Why are Gibson guitars so expensive?
Because completely made by hand in America, even though that's a retarded way of making things now from a cost-to-quality standpoint.
Also because
>muh presteege n Truhdishuns

>How did black guys in the 50s afford them?
They generally didn't, see pic related.

Until their audience became significantly or completely white thanks to the 1960s Blues and R&B boom, most black artists couldn't afford Gibson guitars.

Sonically I absolutely love both Telecasters and Stratocasters, they both have their own personality and are about as good as it gets when placed in the hands of great musicians. Teles are excellent at what they do and Strats are excellent at what they do, I actually find it quite interesting when they're nudged into each other's respective genre territory. I'd love to hear Clarence White of The Byrds try a Strat on some of his tracks and I'd love to hear Hendrix try a Tele on some of his.

The decision for me mostly came down to playability and which instrument felt better in my hands. I grew up exclusively playing guitars with two pickups, and with that my right hand found a natural resting position by the bridge. That position is slightly different on a Strat and most three pickup guitars, so every time I pick up a Strat I find myself beating the shit out of the middle pickup with my guitar pick and I end up turning the volume down every time I strum. If I adjust my hand to accommodate the Strat layout I no longer feel as comfortable playing and it distracts me from the music.

That being said I'm happy that I've stuck with the Telecaster as a primary instrument, I adore everything about them. They're understated in appearance, utilitarian and refined in setup and electronics, they reveal every little aspect of your playing style, they're very light guitars most of the time, have great necks (although that applies to most flagship Fenders), and they sound absolutely gorgeous on the middle / neck pickup. The modern American Standard stock pickups are just amazing.

>>
>>61934068
Pretty much this.
>>
>>61936564
Octave down doesn't work the same as a real bass.
8 strings and 9 strings don't have a low B either, and their scale and electronics are different from a bass. Plus most of the time, their users send them through an axe fx instead of an actual amp.
>>
>>61936119
I didn't, but only because I'm at work.

>How did black guys in the 50s afford them?
The les paul was discontinued from 1960-1968, literally nobody wanted them and 50s les pauls were cheap as fuck.
>>
>>61936736
Yep. About the only black guy I know of who had a real 50s Les Paul during that time was Freddie King.
>>
>>61936698
How does it not? It produces low notes, and you seem to be under the impression that low notes are inherently harmful

8 string tuning:
F# B E A D G B E, many people drop the F# to E, the same E as a bass

9 string tuning:
Same as 8 string but with a low C#. It's safe to assume that the epic djenters who play 9 strings will drop that down to B
>>
>>61936600

Nigga please, all the early swing and jazz guys in the 20s and 30s had expensive as fuck guitars. You have to remember that back then it wasn't crazy to spend a huge amount on an instrument just like the Brass/String guys in the band did.

The notion of guitars needing to be cheap instruments only came after mass production. Back then even a broke ass nigga though an expensive guitar was something worth saving for.

Long story short, I'm buying a Squier Classic Vibe in the near future, but I came to realize that I wouldn't be able to notice if I was being sold a lesser model than a Classic Vibe. They have a sticker now I think, but they used to not have it, and there's nothing else that could tell me which model it would actually be.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Depends-Do you know of any music store retailers who want to maximize profit and don't care about screwing over the consumers with little to no money? Because those stores would totally do that shit.
But to that end, I guess that's why Fender and Squier put unique finishes on the different tiers of their instruments, so the consumer can tell them apart.

That's the 6505MH, they're unvealing the 6505 piranha, which is a 20W version of the 6505, but with only a 12AX7, and undetailed power amp section, which I guess is probably going to be SS, whereas the 6505MH has 3 12AX7 in the pre and 2 EL84 in the power amp section.
What I'm surprised of is that both spec wise and price wise, it seems really similar to the Orange Micro Dark Terror, which also is 20w, 12AX7 pre and SS power amp, with three knobs on the facade.

Not true.

Bass destroying guitar amps and speakers is a meme.

The speakers used for guitars simply put have "lower volume" at <60hz. So to hear the fundamental bass boom you turn them up extremely loud while still creating the illusion you don't have enough volume.
It's possible if you keep running the amp perpetually on 10 something will blow but not because you are using bass, it's because you are retard running the amp on 10 all the time.

The other meme is that bass guitar output is so high it'll blow the amp.
That's not how it works.
>>
>>61939026
>>61939342

>slap
Can't really be done with a piezo pickup, as I'm sure you already knew.
But if you're so hung up on slapping, then I guess you don't consider a P bass "pro-level" either, since it also doesn't do slapping well.

honestly i'd find a teacher, if you dont have a guitar get a high end squier if you can afford that, otherwise just get a starter pack at your local shop. start with something simple like a tele or a strat style, maybe a les paul if you can find one cheap.
make sure your teacher is spending more time letting you play and watching you than stopping ou constantly to demo stuff himself. he needs to make sure you understand things before you move on, and if he's not teaching you some amount of theory then drop him. most teachers will offer like a free half hour intro thing so dont be afraid about that.
also make sure the guitar shop sets up the guitar when you get it, itll make it playable.
