Yes, it's an excellent point of growth for rock music in general. The only stuff you really want to avoid is "symphonic prog" because it gets a lot more boring and you'll find yourself looking at the track length over and over to see when it ends. Prog that mixes jazz-rock in is a winning combination, too. It's a little harder to find great prog in the 80s-90s but it's well worth it (Djam Karet and Ozric Tentacles, for god sake). Dream Theater, I didn't really like em so much, compared to other things I've heard they're not really great. Just decent.
