>DB: Heckel's Roquairol and also his print from 1910 or thereabouts called Young Man was a major influence on me as a painter. I personally couldn't stand Gramatte. He was wishy washy in my opinion. I have seen the Gramatte in question but no, it was Heckel.

Those guys who say that it was inspired by that panting of Erich Heckel are actually right.
Bowie was a huge fan of the art of the 1920s' expressionists and especially from the german art collcetive Die Brücke. He studied those painting a lot during his time in Berlin. They not only inspired him in a general way but also specifically for photo series and own drawings (pic related).
There was a whole section about that and many Bowie paintings in the Bowie exhibition I visited last year in Berlin.
