They sum up a lot of stuff honestly so you don't need to play 13 first. That said, I enjoyed 13 when I played it back on 360 but avoided the endgame as it was quite the dreadful grind. If you really can't deal with the linearity then it's probably better to avoid, but I still had a lot of fun just following the rails and the crazy story.
