I like MIA, I think she rides the line between party bangers and genuinely interesting and engaging music very well. She's someone that I can play for almost anybody, which isn't to say that she panders to the LCD, but rather that her music is strong enough to generate value to a wide variety of taste sets. On top of that, her lyrics and themes are thoughtful, range from fun to serious, and don't generally come off as preachy but instead are sincere and provocative (generally). Anybody that blends even a hint of so-called world music into pop songs is already on the right track in my book, and MIA does it with respect and has the ethnic street cred to back it up. She also has a great sense of style, and her music videos, which I believe are mostly self-directed, are usually fantastic.

No one really paid attention to Paper Planes in 2007, it wasn't even Kala's first single. The Pineapple Express trailer played a large part in bringing it to everyone's attention. It was somewhat of a sleeper hit.
I hope she does some solo production on the next album. Her auteur-ship has never been in doubt, but just out of curiosity I'd like to hear what her productions like. She has plenty of co production creds across her albums and she was signed to XL based on demos she produced. So she obviously can do it.
