Sorry if this is too pleb but I'm just going to drop three recordings of some of my favorite GnS operas (The Mikado, The Gondoliers, and Trial by Jury) from the 1920s, featuring some of the best D'Oyly Carte performers like Leo Sheffield and Henry Lytton.
I also highly encourage that you buy these recordings too, because the transfers are the best I could ask for, all things considered, and the business (78s2cd) is rather small.

I'd consider Pinafore to be the most pleb (damn good, but still pleb) of the operas because it has a very early musical comedy style. Either way, recordings of Pinafore are easier to come by than Princess Ida (which has some of the most delightful music Sullivan ever composed in it)
Right here in fact is a 1929 recording of Pinafore featuring Sir Henry Lytton as Sir Joseph Porter in it.

That's an interesting way to look at the conflict, since I always felt that Yeoman was rather unique in how serious it was. Most people would say it was a Gilbert or Sullivan conflict (take Ruddigore vs Gondoliers, for example)
