Sharethred 2016 #6

Previous thread >>61699812

When posting an album, make sure to post the FULL LINK for it (if you're posting a link from MEGA, THIS INCLUDES THE DECRYPTION KEY TOO) along with a sample of the album from YouTube (or just upload a track to clyp.it if there's nothing on YouTube), album art, as well as the name of the artist and album. This makes it easier for people to find these albums in the archive after the thread has 404'd.

Feel free to request, but make sure to be polite and post something before requesting (preferably something not already in the archive). This is a share thread, after all, emphasis on share.

If you're looking for an album, check the archive (https://archive.rebeccablacktech.com/mu/) before posting or requesting something, it might already be available. Type in the band name, the album name, as well as the word MEGA or ZIPPY and it might show up.

Yeah I just recently discovered his Bandcamp.

https://iglooghost.bandcamp.com

Also here's where I found Milk Empire, and anything similar to it (although nowhere near as kooky): https://activiabenz.bandcamp.com/

Milk Empire is insanely more maximal than Chinese Nu Yr, which is why I enjoy it so much. Plus, it emphasizes Mr. Yote a ton.

Sorry, man. I know pretty much nothing about this guy's music other than what I've shared
>>
>>61731172
The closest to what I have is the Last.fm page on him.

"Couldn't be more excited about this one, first offering from the smoked out styles of Iowa City's very own Savage Young Taterbug. Teenage road warrior, dead head punk, perma triped wanderer, Taterbug lays down his tape collaged world of free flowing Americana psych bliss. Little bells, dustbowl ballad guitars, stand by me youth cult dreams, and Manson family mind fucks, its all here, even hope for a better tomorrow and a positive spirit for today which can say alot in these droned out wasted times. Let the light inside yr skull"

"Taterbug aka Charles Free is a memoryscaper or maybe he collected these sounds from the dusty webs of old dreamcatchers full of lucid sensations and weird formative moments. This track is full of these, transferred onto new and found brittle cassette reels, with more bluesy childhood feelings, haunted vocals, lush keyboard whistles, and slowly melting soul samples – think a peaced-out Ariel Pink with the celestial moments of James Ferraro. Total dreamer"

"A desolate roadside bar. Patrons of all collars stumbling in and out as a busted jukebox keeps the time. In strolls Charles Free, a witness to the chaos of the hardworking and the lazy alike. Dressed in the robes of the bum, Free easily fades into the crowd and gains their trust. Yet it isn’t the sad tales that Free recalls on Syrupy Evenings; it’s the tortoise speed of alcohol dulling the senses and the slow-motion pace of lips meeting beer and warped records spinning on a 50 year-old piece of equipment"

Upon looking for a sample of his stuff (which I couldn't anything on Utoob that was related to the EPs I shared), I found out that he had performed a live show where I currently live in 2013.

That's sort of neat
>>

>Seeburg made background music (elevator music) players back in the good old days. They were a jukebox company, so they used vinyl records. some is pretty cool, some is lame but enjoyable if you like campy kitch. i think the mood category is "better" but i just like it for what it is. i prefer this as background over actual modern top 40 that you hear on the clearchannel stream in so many places these days.

What's EAI?
>>
>>61743487
do you not understand how 16rpms affects the analogue equivalent of "bitrate"?

these are all beat to shit old vinyl plates that NEED to be played on beat to shit old proprietary record players that were crap to begin with in order to get the proper spindle diameter and speed. at no point in the existence of this music did fidelity ever enter into it.

they were "low bitrate" even when you heard them played brand new in 1969.

Yo bro-bro
Sadly I don't have the two albums that actually feature Stephane Grapelli.
If you like Grapelli's sound then I suggest his earlier stuff like Electric Connection, The Jean-Luc Ponty Experience, King Kong (composed by Zappa), and even Upon The Wings Of Music.
If you like violin centered jazz in general is suggest listening to everything.
Especially Upon The Wings Of Music, Aurora, Imaginary Voyage, Enigmatic Ocean, and Cosmic Messenger. He get's some of the best musicians and it fits the three E's just fine. (Electric, Eclectic, Eccentric)
I suggest looking him up on Wiki to get a good feel of what you're getting into.
>>
>>61743487
tbf that page is from 2008, and in 2008 most people weren't ever concerned with going higher than 192, and m o s t of the files floating around were 128. a lot of those 128s are still floating around.

it does suck though. there's all kinds of great finds on archive.org, but they're all 32-128 rips. almost defeats the purposes of archiving.
>>
>>61743627
So if they were digitally capturing Edison's wax tubes today, they would use a cheap, shitty mic and record straight to a late-90's MP3 at 32kbps, right? The fact that it's so low-fidelity now means that all the more care should be taken to preserve what little is left. Hard drive space is so cheap it doesn't make sense to absolutely destroy the quality of a rare recording in the name of a few megabytes.

>>61743683
I lose sleep over how much quality was lost by not distributing files like that as 64kbps Opus.
>>
>>61743923
>quality of a rare recording in the name of a few megabytes

yeah, but comparing this cheezy music to anything approaching the importance of Edison's cylinders is ludicrous and this was all done by fans in their garage, not some archival conservatory.

some of us love library recordings and stuff like this for what they are/were m8. they're probably a better historical record of the day to day soundtrack of many people's lives (music they heard at work, while shopping, on television) than anything else. whether the quality of the music is derivative or stylistically pastiche isn't a good reason for it to be lost to time. it also provides context to lounge/exotica/easy listening... people bought music that sounded like this to listen to at home as well.

anyway.

>field recordings
>Exactly what the title says. Sounds of a busy railyard. Listen to spectacular sounds of switching engines, GM SW 1500's, and GP-9's assembling lines of cars. Includes several different train scenarios, each with their own particular sound, including radio transmissions and different types of horns. A very textural experience.

someone might know this, it's in a similar vein. i remember watching this sound doco on tv when i was a child, there was this blonde woman who had edited the cheers and chants of the crowds at football (or soccer to you) matches, i distinctly remember she made a point of saying no affects or pitch adjustments had been made to the recordings they had imply been layered and looped.

the result was like an amazing symphony, i had never heard anything like it and haven't since, and probably never will again. the show also had a bit about gavin bryars 'jesus' blood..'

no one will know.

I heard he wrote Five Miles Out after almost dying in a plane accident. He lost altitude and went offcourse, and at one point was heading straight for the ground. The music just came to him, with the angelic voices and the yelling simultaneously. It's pretty strong if you take that into account when you listen to it.

Great 70s guitar sounds, repetitive but pretty good. It has some pretty sick falsetto in the second half too.

lives in iowa city

learned how to play piano from listening to noise music

that other guy posted the last.fm description of him

there's a couple of videos of him on youtube if you're interested

seems like a really odd guy

i feel like its pretentious to say but he gives me this really post ironic avant-garde vibe

His music always gives me this vibe of being out on a rural farm in iowa the 50s listening to whatever shitty music could actually get to your radio. But like in a really good enjoyable way.
