Here's the thing about Ian. The man had some serious pipes. He had a seven octave range and excelled in any octave. He wrote brilliant songs. And his stage presence was only matched by Adolf Hitler.

Seriously, Watch Joy Division play She's Lost Control at Something Else Show and then watch a video of the Nuremburg rallies. We better thank our lucky stars Ian didn't go into politics or he would have taken over the world.

But Joy Division as a whole had a brilliant dynamic. It wasn't just the Ian Curtis backup band. They all made huge creative contributions to what made JD what it is. Yes Ian wrote Transmission, Love Will Tear Us Apart and Insight.

But Peter Hook wrote Disorder, Atrocity Exhibition and Colony. Bernard Sumner wrote Dead Souls, Shadow Play, Leaders of men.

Other bands like The Talking Heads for instance were not like that. The Talking heads were basically just the David Byrne backup band. Joy Division was the perfect storm of legendary talent, and Ian was the face of it all, the delicious cherry on top of an already delicious sundae.

He was the ambassador that allowed the amazing talent of the combo that was Joy Division to be brought into our lives. He was the prism that focused the lazer beams from the brains of Bernard, Peter and Stephen and amplified them until they were powerful enough to blow out minds out through our ear holes.

>a seven octave range
That's... no. That's no. He was a great singer but he barely had any range at all.

how do you figure?

have you listened to them live?

It's not that much of a secret, he had a very limited range. You can watch all the live performances you want, he most certainly did NOT have a 7 octave range. Freddie Mercury didn't even have 5 octaves.

Why did Ian Curtis kill himself after listening to Iggy Pop's The Idiot? Because he didn't have Lust for Life

This is also news to me, do you have a link to something shows him singing with that range? That's nearly the full span of a piano. Note as well that range refers to controlled pitch, squeaking out an indefinite falsetto or hitting some low gravelly formless note aren't really counted since almost anyone without any training can do that.

You're right in the fact that Joy Division was a collaborative effort, but they all took part in writing songs. If peter hook came in with a bass line, they would write around that. Same with any other member. If Ian came in with lyrics, Hook would write a bass line. They are talented. However, Ian did not have a wide vocal range and Peter Hook wrote that in his book. That's why he admired Lou Reed and Iggy Pop because they kind of vocal styles.
