Because popular music (all bands and producers) just isn't that good.
Here's a picture of Lili boulanger, aged 19, just after beconing the first woman to win the Prix de Rome
Unfortunately she died at 24 from Crohn's disease

Going for an inflammatory thread huh?
More Lili I guess
>tfw meme'd her early on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BQgfSfMG4E
She can be quite profound

>>61451841
is she the dog
>>61452293
"yes"?
rose's EQ may be pretty shit from time to time, but the dude certainly knows how to stabilize and properly re-pitch a recording
pretty decent stuff
>>61451841
that's a big dog
How do you "get into" classical? It seems impenetrable.
>>61454536
start with the bachs
>>61454536
go for the bach door
>>61454382
FOR YOU
>>61454536
You pretend.
>It is not at all natural to want to listen to classical music. Learning to appreciate it is like Pascal's wager: you pretend to be religious, and suddenly you have faith. You pretend to love Beethoven-or Stravinsky-because you think that will make you appear educated and cultured and intelligent, because that kind of music is prestigious in professional circles, and suddenly you really love it, you have become a fanatic, you go to concerts and buy records and experience true ecstasy when you hear a good performance (or even when you hear a mediocre one if you have little judgment).
>>61454536
i'm not even into classical, but you just pick somebody and listen to some pieces
that's how i found out i like Debussy and Satie
>>61454598
>>61454616
why Bach?
>>61454667
I already think it sounds good though. I just think it makes more sense to have a chronological starting point to understand how it develops over time.
>>61454711
to go forward one must go bachwords
>>61454711
are you one of those people who fell for /lit/'s "start with the greeks" meme
>>61454735
I've read some Greek writing. Don't you think it's important to see how influences started? Admittedly though it would be more important in literature than in music.
>>61454782
of fucking course you should read SOME and sample SOME early bits of everything
but there are people who actually fell for the meme and read ALL the known Greek texts first
it's not necessary
>not starting with the monks
>>61454711
>I just think it makes more sense to have a chronological starting point
It doesn't. I've found that most young people get into classical with the romantics and then work their way backwards. For some reason composers like Rachmaninoff and Debussy are easier to digest for listeners who are more accustomed to contemporary music.
>>61454536
start with the Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima
What does /classical/ think of this edgy fuck?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fs_AgCTovik
>tfw spending hours properly tagging files
I've only found a few compositions I enjoy.
Messiaen - Quartet for the End of Time
Riley - In C and the Padova Concert
Reich - Early Works and Six Marimbas
Feldman - Turfan Fragments
Ligeti - Atmospheres
Ives - The Unanswered Question
Tallis - Spem in Alium
Could anyone tell me what a good next step would be for me?
Where to start with Stockhausen if I enjoy Can?
>>61455830
Listen to Mozart.
What does /classical/ think of Scriabin/Nemtin's Prefatory Action?
Bump with a fresh rip.

Watch carefully for his use of spatial elements: where the player is and what direction they're facing.
>>61454667
That sounds like Stockholm syndrome.

this is some fantastic bait

Can anyone recommend me some Bach that is similar to Chopin's faster etudes, more specifically no 10 op 4 and op 12 and just all those songs. I wanna feel like I'm listening to a really good prog metal band. But Bach.
what does /classical/ think of jazz?
>>61457632
It's good.

Some of the later faster harpsichord duos are insane
>>61457652
Fuck off poly.
>>61455028
Some of the most forward-looking music of his time. Sublime imo
>>61457680
I miss poly desu. We have nobody to make fun of anymore
>>61457708
He's still here though, he just took his trip off :)
>>61457060
>>61457652
Put your trip back on Poly.
That wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I want solo piano, extreme arpeggios and scales with a lingering melody that holds it all together and keeps it organic. Like Chopin! I wanna hear Mozart and Bach's take on that style.
Friendly reminder that John Cage is the worst thing that every happened to music
https://youtu.be/bMNfuWGXHVc
>>61455830
maybe explore those composers a bit more? or go by instrumentation you like. that's how I tend to do things.
For instance I tend to like compositions for small ensembles and particularly woodwind as I'm a flute player. So I sift through composers I like with those parameters.
I love Ligeti. This is excellent

Btw do you guys say liGETi or LIGeti? where is the stress?
>>61456048
plebtier garbage

liGETi
>>61458784
I'm not mad, I said it was a *friendly* reminder
>>61458898
actually pretty sure it's LIgeti. according to wikipedia's IPA
>>61458067
Fucking lol at that video
>>61455830
*tips fedora*
>>61458067
This has to be a joke right
>>61459068
Nope. Here's a video of Cage performing it himself.
https://youtu.be/Yybn6iKmYdQ
Performance starts at 05:55
>>61459878
I'm convinced this is probably just him poking fun at himself. I mean come on.
>>61458067
dont you find pure sounds interesting?
Its carefully composed. what didn't you like about it? We can all agree its not music as we usually know it, but does that make it any less interesting?
>>61458067
No worse than Beethoven.
