so noise is art music because it's played at libraries and isn't targeted at mass-market
>>
>>61409855
1. Plato (speaking through Socrates)'s model of the human soul contains 3 parts: appetite, will and reason

there is no way to dispute this, because the argument is vague and unfalsifyable

2. reading the above quote: "an unmusical anarchy"
Plato Never actually defines music, and It would not actually be "defined" as such for centuries
Besides, who is he to dictate what is and isn't music, hop off that dick son.

3. Plato (along with most other Ancient philosophers) believed that philosophy and education belonged to the privileged elites, do we not all bleed the same blood?
>>
>>61409982
The image does not imply a causal relation between the market and sophistication of music.

The defining criterion for Art music is that it's intended to be listened carefully and thoroughly dissected.
>>
In 2003, psychologists Jason Rentfrow and Sam Gosling said most people's musical preferences fell into one of four categories: reflective and complex; upbeat and conventional; energetic and rhythmic; and intense and rebellious.

By asking thousands of students at the University of Texas about what music they liked, they concluded that extraverts tend to seek out songs laden with bass, while people who enjoy listening to jazz and classical music tend to be more creative and have higher IQs.
>>
>>61409811
No senpai.
I lack critical social skills but my intelligence is not to be doubted.
>>
>>61409999
I'd say modern noise more often relies on raw emotions so it's hard to dissect it. Well, sometimes there are quite sophisticated pieces, for example Zeitkratzer acoustic "cover" of metal machine.
In my opinion noise can be both, depends who approaches it.
>>

2. Energetic and rhythmic

>>
This proves nothing, probably most people are below average.
>>
You know what's funny?

Ame can't even read music or play an instrument.
>>
This probably applies best to the dissolution of tonality in modernist music, so the bottom images should be folks like schonberg and berio, not kanye and bandcamp artists- folk and pop will always be folk and pop. to that end, plato's view may only make sense when applied to the aristocracy it seems to refer to, not the masses

IQ tests are bullshit

some hypotetical example to show how it works.
the average now is 100.

now imagine everyone with IQ higher than 70 suddently disappear, the only few left with higher IQ are the ones needed to make IQ tests still be made and etc..

Now imagine you appear at the future.
At this future the IQ will still be 100 and you will have a higher IQ while being the same person as before
>>
>>61410075
>implying IQ tests must be taken seriously
>>
... You know "average" has two meanings, right? It doesn't necessarily mean "mediocre". And almost everybody thinks they're above average. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusory_superiority

Also, I'm not convinced that intelligence directly influences musical taste. Sure, you can find correlations, because more educated people tend to belong to higher social classes and know more about "high culture" — but let's be honest, you don't have to think hard in order to enjoy music at all. It's not like chess, math or philosophy, or even reading postmodern novels if you're into that. How many people want to get into classical music mostly because it's highly regarded by society? How many enjoy classical because it sounds good, but really don't know much about music theory?

Haha, no. Just like there are still artistic masterpieces in vidya, the newest artistic medium of all, and as there are still artistic masterpieces in film post 2000, as well as.. well literature this century is dead, but that's not the point. Majora's Mask, Planescape:Torment, Silent Hill 2, Pathalogic, NieR, Drakengard, Killer 7, Live a Live, Mother 3, The Void, Deus Ex, Space Funeral, and arguably Undertale are all better than the vast majority of all music, including classical. They are modern day masterpieces and they will be the game's studied 100 years from now, not for their popularity, but for their method of creative story telling through interactive means as well as the valuable messages they hold. Everyone knows that Music is the lowest tier artistic medium, even below vidya.

Literature, Film, Vidya, and everything else, is better than music.
>>
>>61411150
You can ask any other board and they'd agree with me, especially /lit/. Video games are for children. They don't deserved to even be compared to literature and poetry. Keep perpetuating your League addiction, though.
>>
>>61411184
Using that same argument, you could claim that Film is not art, when in actuality, it is art solely because of it's creative and original usage of getting a narrative across. The reason modern film is considered shit because their directing is lazy, and they might as well be writing a novel. Videogames, as an interactive medium, have great potential for story telling and have taken advantage of that potential to make the masterpieces I have mentioned.

You can find none of this for music, because music is not deep, nor complex, nor does it hold any value aside from entertainment, and therefore is a trash artistic medium that has no right to judge any other.

thats actually amazing the relevence of that plato quote today. it literally would have had no relevance outside of ancient greece until around the time recorded music became an industry in the 20th century. crazy how history repeats itself even after 1000s of years of being something different.

ive heard there was the equivelent of popular music in greece. anyone know any other historical cultures which had one?

traditional folk music is not popular music.... i guess maybe minstil music could be considered popular music but im referring to an industry where performers make original music for entertainment not songs that past down and contain a history of culture within them.
>>
>>61412347
do you know what "average" means
>>

That's awfully pedantic considering the game's titled "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" and she's almost never gets a lot of screentime to begin with.
>>
>>61412397
Imo the folk music/pop music distinction has always been fairly dodgy. Does popular music need the industry which backs it to be popular music? If so, I'd say there wasn't pop music in ancient Greece either, given that the recording industry didn't exist back then.
>>
>>61412397
>make original music for entertainment
That's what a lot of folk music is. The parts of folk msic that were preserved the best were actually directed to some populations higher on their social ladders (like religious music or the music that paset down history)
>>
>>61412412
not him but

do you?

the average of 10, 100, 90, and 80 is 70.
75% of those numbers are above the average
>>
>>61412453
Popular music is preserved through recordings, traditional music is preserved through oral transmission. This isn't dodgy in the slightest.
>>
>>61412471
Average can refer to both the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean but that's irrelevant in the context of intelligence which is normally distributed.
>>
>>61412471
Intelligence is evenly and randomly spread, not biased like your example.

Are recordings of folk music still folk music? Does the introduction of recording technology into a culture mean that their folk music will slowly be replaced by popular music? Who in the civilized world still uses oral transmission for anything?
>>
>>61412580
I have some speculation between the type of music that is conducive to one's occupation and the correlation between occupation and IQ.

From slaves in the fields to chain gangs in prison, manual labor has a long association with vocal music, which may perhaps carry over to the modern variants (pop, rock, country, R&B) that one might hear on an assembly line or at a construction site. I wonder if the lyrics of those genres might interfere with whiter-collar work that often employs language (scientists, engineers, technical workers, writers).

When I'm reading a technical manual, writing a procedural document, or juggling database tables, I gravitate toward instrumental music (Bach's Art of the Fugue, Brandenburg Concertos, cello suites, and the Well-Tempered Clavier; Beethoven's piano sonatas and string quartets; Mahler's symphonies; almost anything by Coltrane, Miles, Mingus, or Monk) and will shun most vocal music that I otherwise enjoy--but only if it's sung in English. I don't remember enough German for Schubert's lieder or Wagner's Ring to become distracting.

If simultaneous language tasks can overwhelm the brain's speech centers, could this lead to a preference for instrumental music?

There are overlaps between art, traditional and popular music, but most folk/art/popular music has been preserved though oral/written/recorded means.
>Does the introduction of recording technology into a culture mean that their folk music will slowly be replaced by popular music?
It's possible, but unlikely, as folk music can now be recorded, but it's still a oral tradition, as it has been preserved by oral transmission for the longest time.
>Who in the civilized world still uses oral transmission for anything?
Humming a melody to someone else is already oral transmission of music.

anyway onto the list

1. Roberto Bolano - 2666 (2004)
2.Mark Z. Danielewsky - House of Leaves (2000)
3. Cormac McCarthy - No Country for Old Men (2005)
4. Thomas Pynchon - Inherent Vice (2009)
5. Haruki Murakami - Kafka on The Shore (2002)

the idea that 50 percent of the population have an IQ of below 100 is really misleading.
In the States I think the average IQ is somewhere around 106. Keep in mind that anywhere about 50 percent of the population is 15 points above or below the median. That means in a place with an average IQ of 100, 50% fall between 115, which isn't really that smart, and 85, which isn't really that dumb. That means that 25% are above 115 (120 is considered high intelligence and capable of success in almost any field, 130 is considered gifted, and 150 is considered genius; the highest confirmed IQ is 210), and only 25% are below 85 (below 80 is borderline retarded, below 70 is retarded; the average person with Down Syndrome has an IQ of 65).

How you do in IQ tests is hugely dictated by what you've been exposed to. Somebody from a city in North America or East Asia, who's spent their entire life being tested through problems on paper, will inevitably do better than some kid in the sahel in West Africa who spends all their time peanut farming. Much of the world's population has no experience being tested, and thus are out of practice, inevitably doing poorly on IQ tests. Their poor performance has little to do with their actual cognitive functioning, as evidenced by the fact that people in such rural, impoverished areas are often capable of complex tasks like crop cultivation, engineering basic electronics and waterways, welding, and ability in multiple languages.

Conversely, if you're in college, you're there with people who have spent their entire lives in academia. The average undergrad student has an IQ of 115, which is supposedly high for the general population. If you've seen the average undergrad student, this is laughable.

As for its relation to music, keep in mind that some of the greatest musicians in history are "idiot savants" (low IQ autistic savants), but if you go to a party at UC Berkeley you'll still probably hear Taylor Swift and Ke$ha.

My Little Pony did nothing to me either, it's a nice kids show. But when adult people start an unhealthy obsession over it, shoehorn it to unrelated posts, and share sexual fantasies over the characters, that's when it bothers me.
