In the States I think the average IQ is somewhere around 106. Keep in mind that anywhere about 50 percent of the population is 15 points above or below the median. That means in a place with an average IQ of 100, 50% fall between 115, which isn't really that smart, and 85, which isn't really that dumb. That means that 25% are above 115 (120 is considered high intelligence and capable of success in almost any field, 130 is considered gifted, and 150 is considered genius; the highest confirmed IQ is 210), and only 25% are below 85 (below 80 is borderline retarded, below 70 is retarded; the average person with Down Syndrome has an IQ of 65).
How you do in IQ tests is hugely dictated by what you've been exposed to. Somebody from a city in North America or East Asia, who's spent their entire life being tested through problems on paper, will inevitably do better than some kid in the sahel in West Africa who spends all their time peanut farming. Much of the world's population has no experience being tested, and thus are out of practice, inevitably doing poorly on IQ tests. Their poor performance has little to do with their actual cognitive functioning, as evidenced by the fact that people in such rural, impoverished areas are often capable of complex tasks like crop cultivation, engineering basic electronics and waterways, welding, and ability in multiple languages.
Conversely, if you're in college, you're there with people who have spent their entire lives in academia. The average undergrad student has an IQ of 115, which is supposedly high for the general population. If you've seen the average undergrad student, this is laughable.
As for its relation to music, keep in mind that some of the greatest musicians in history are "idiot savants" (low IQ autistic savants), but if you go to a party at UC Berkeley you'll still probably hear Taylor Swift and Ke$ha.
