I'm thinking Van Halen was the best hard rock band

>Energetic frontman
>In your face rock guitarist who reinvented guitar wanking
>Solid bassist with killer backing vocals
>Grooving drums that fit the songs
>>
Mercyful Fate

Everything else is garbage

Depends what you like; there are a lot of sub-genres.

For mainstream stuff, Def Leppard's second album "High and Dry" is one of my own favorites.

High and Dry is great, every song has sick twin guitar work and it's not as slickly produced as their later stuff.
