Is Jaco Pastorius legit, or is he only notable because he got himself killed by being a combative jackass?

Listen to his stuff. It's legit in terms of difficulty and musicality. Good ability to compose and improvise was astounding.

If you listen to his solo renditions and his band works, he was legit
I mean, anybody who can collaborate with Bireli Lagrene, Wayne Shorter, John Mclaughlin, Tony Williams, Weather Report, and also have a successful solo career and change the face of bass forever, all before the age of 35, is surely legit in my book

Legit you fugboi, don't you have ears?

Listen to some Weather Report he was on and find out.
total hack

>jazz fusion album
>big fedora on the cover
lmao, well memed
His biggest stardom was over long ago when he died, so there.
I think in retrospect he was overrated, although he was influential. Weather Report's albums before Jaco are better than the ones with him.
I do like Joni Mitchell's music when Jaco was the musical director of her band.

What's the best album he was in?

Check his self titled debut, Weather Report's Heavy Weather and Joni Mitchell's Shadows and Light (that has a killer jazz band backing Joni live with Jaco, Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Don Alias and Lyle Mays in it)
