Hey /mu/, let's have a post-rock thread. So I went onto RYM and went down the list of post-rock releases. I just finished listening to alot of releases from 1996 and I'm about to move onto 1997. So far these are the ones I enjoyed the most. What do you guys think? What are the ones you enjoyed?
>>
>>61376681
2nd and 3rd wave post-rock are progressively worse. Some first wave is really good though. Laughing Stock is great although I prefer Spirit of Eden

Hate to post Pitchfork core...
>>
>>61376900
nothing wrong with liking that album though
>>
>>61376900
>falling for this meme

an album is an album. Because pitchfork gave it a good review doesn't mean it's their album lol.
>>
Make sure to check out .O.Rang and Mark Hollis' solo album. The latter is probably the closest to a sixth Talk Talk album I found, considering they become more silent and sparse with each release.
>>
>>61376943
Lol, of course not. I think it's the best album of all time in my opinion. It's kind of a meme though.

It isn't post-rock, but it fits here better than anywhere else

it's a real beauty, moves almost like a classical piece

Testing the boundaries of this "genre" a bit.

The Psychic Paramount - Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Cf8Bogv7E
>noisey psychedelic mindfuckery, like if O'Rourke continued Brise-Glace instead of Gastr

Critters Buggin - Stampede
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6dK4sFafks
>jazz fusion rock, like a more jazz infused Tortoise

Storm & Stress - s/t
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMdd0wGe04A
>free jazz played with rock instruments in a "rock" style. Ex-Don Cab, pre-Battles. Actually, does Battles belong here?
>>
>>61377970
thanks for sharing man
>>
>>61378250
Sure.
So waddaya think? Do they belong?
>>
>>61376681
Listen to Disco Inferno if you haven't yet (doubt it) and the 5 EPs compilation (Technicolour in my opinion is the best of their albums, but not relevant since it's more noise pop than post rock)
>>
>>61378356
>Psychic Paramount
You could make an argument for why it's post-rock, but to me it sounds more noise rock and than post-rock

>Critters Buggin
Kinda reminds me of the second Moonshake album. But yeah, I'd consider this post-rock.

>storm & stress
Absolutely

one of those krautrock heavy Fucked Up 12"s
>>
Bark Psychosis - Hex

Shocked that you agreed on S&S. One of the hallmarks of most post-rock for me is that it's meticulously planned. Still a great record though.

>>

>>

You liked it? They are quite like one of my favourites bands.
>>
>>61379736
Oh, I loved it. Thought it was great
>>
>>61379707
Did you enjoyed it? They are one of my favourite bands, but I mainly listen to them for the lyrics.
>>
>>61379767
Yes, I really enjoyed it
>>
>>61379752
Cool, listen to the others then. Stanze, the first one, is more like noise rock.

Ah, I wasn't a fan of this album my first listen, but I'll consider giving a second try. I remember there were parts that were pretty good
>>
>>61376681

When you hit 1998, check out Gastr del Sol's true masterpiece, Camoufleur. Then just stop listening to music, it's practically all downhill from there.
>>
>>61380256
I cheated a little. After I heard Upgrade and Afterlife and instantly fell in love, I went ahead and listened to Camoufleur. If it had not been for two tracks on it, I would say it was better, but so far I still prefer Upgrade and Afterlife
>>
>>61380256
I can agree with that.
Blues Subtitle No Sense of Wonder
and Each Dream is an Example are two of the prettiest tracks I've ever heard
>>
>>61380300

Camoufleur is a sincere, honest 10 for me. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

Reminder that you really can't approach Godspeed Side projects expecting anything like Godspeed. That being said, some of them surpass some of Godspeed's albums, such as He has Left Us or Signs Reigns Rebuilder.
>>
>>61376741
Post-Rock is really just experimental rock that gets labeled together.

Signs Regin Rebuilder is getting to that point with me, but it's one of those albums where it is likely to take a while for you to really get into it.

retard here

What does post-rock even mean? Wiki says using rock instruments to play non-rock music.

Literally what?
>>
>>61383397
Usually that means music that sounds a bit more akin to classical compositions, but it varies by band.
imo really, it's just one big term for a lot of somewhat similar experimental rock, and the music inspired by that wave of experimental rock.
>>
>>61383439
So is classical defined by instruments?

Say you're talking with a normie, you say you like post-rock, and they ask what that is, how would you respond?
>>
>>61383439
but when you say experimental rock, one thinks of prog.
>>
Any of you guys listen to Mooncake?

they're an amazing post rock band...this is a quote from them that sums up everything i feel about the genre:

>There are things essential for any instrumental music on the whole. It can be good, catchy melodies or outstanding technical skills - you just balance between the two or pick one and go on making a quality product.
>If we talk about post-rock, nowadays it lacks both - you can hardly find genuine melodies or good musicians with technques. Now it's all about playing one lame harmony in a cycle which is based on ups and downs. That is sad, but you can do nothing about that - post-rock does become a shelter for those who just can't play or compose properly. Surrounded by numerous effect-pedals, these musicians make their way towards wide audience and the latter buys it.

and here's my favorite song:

>>61383439
I feel like you don't need the classical structure to be considered post-rock. Like the examples >>61377970 gave, I feel like post-rock can be alot more than just that

Literally just what I told you, and I had to say that to someone earlier today. I don't know if it was a sufficient explanation, but it's a bit hard to really describe it in words and sum up most things that fall under the post-rock banner.

>>61383514
Post-rock really isn't that far off from prog except in general aesthetics and subject matter. In fact, it's commonly considered a sub-genre of prog.

>>61383588
Which is why I usually say it's just a bunch of experimental rock with a few similarities that's thrown under one big banner.
>>
>>61382659
horses in the sky is better
>>
>>61383642
some of the most well known prog borrows from Satie style dadaism and opera or liberally employs free-jazz skronk. It's fucking embarassing.
