I would probably value the opinion of a fellow chef over that of a food critic.

Anyway, the plain truth is that playing (most) instruments and reading (basic) sheet music is easy. If you take music seriously at all, you should have already learned something by now.
>>
>>61293944
Maybe I don't want to take it seriously.

Maybe I just want something pleasant to shove into my earhole to relax after work and on weekends
>>
>>61293894
I think it takes different abilities to appreciate art than it does to create art.
Music isn't just about technicalities, it's about connecting to the human spirit and knowledge of technical matters doesn't enhance that.
>>
>>61293980
>>61293980
But certainly someone who creates art appreciates its inception.

You've probably just gone through one full year of your music degree. Even if the majority of people on this anime site can't read music you're no better for boasting about it to your imaginary friend group.

Maybe you should check my trips before questioning my tastes. No respect around here. It's almost like he doesn't play an instrument.

making music isn't the same as knowing basic music theory

You won't notice the Gymnopede's chord progression is made of two Major 7th chords if you don't know what a major 7th is or what a chord progression is
>>
>>61294962
So? How does that affect my opinion of the song?
>>
>>61295010
you understand why it sounds dissonant

and why it mattered back when the song was released.
>>
>>61295044
oh and how it shapes other music too, over a hundred years later.

but i dont want to make music! i just want to listen it.
if i notice that notes change what does it matter to know the number of notes that it have-or-how even actually works
>>
While reading music is important, a lot of really great musicians don't read. But that's not to say people should try to learn music without reading it, the percentage of actual musica geniuses who don't know how to read and can just compose music on the fly and have absolute ear are a very small number.

Playing an instrument, absolutely. At least piano and any string-based instrument.

you do realize there's value in an informed opinion and an uninformed opinion?

at least if you care at all about how the overwhelming majority of your audience receives your music
>>
>>61295123
Without this basic knowledge you wouldn't understand why a song is happy or a song is sad.
Or when a song's reached is climax.

and a bunch of other basic shit
>>
>>61295287
you do realize that even regular people can hear the major/minor chords as happy/sad, right?
>>
>>61295287
But if you're having an emotional reaction to a piece of music then it's accomplished its purpose, you don't need to know how it did this to know that you enjoyed it. If I look at a painting and I find it beautiful then I like it, I don't need to understand what kind of brush it was painted with or what kind of paints were used. Rambling about technique when reviewing music comes off as masturbatory and does nothing for the average person.
>>
>>61295365
I have to qualify your position, saying you don't need to is meaningless, you don't even need to art

I think the other anons point is knowing these things enhances the value of your enjoyment as well as your overall opinion
>>
>>61293959
then that's fine, but your opinion doesn't matter

it's not an overly controversial thesis
>>
>study music for 3,5 years
>all music now sounds way too simplified, or like masturbation

never follow your dreams
>>

Pretentious cunt
>>
>>61293944
You'd value the opinion of a shitty McChef over a food critic who has tasted literally thousands of different plates with a critical mind?
>>
>>61293921

this desu
>>
so, on /mu/ I think we are all of the belief that good music is the work of the brain rather than physical talent, right? so why can't someone appreciate music unless they play an instrument, I know far more people who play instruments who have shit taste in music than people who have great taste in music and don't play shit
>>
>>61295360
yeah my point being anon does know basic music theory.

>>61295365
I just don't agree. Knowing why things are the way they are is important.
>>
>>61295991
you're right
>>
>>61296431
>Knowing why things are the way they are is important

bitch anyone can realise what an arpeggio can do for a track, even if they don't know what the term arpeggio means, how the introduction of an instrument or the lack of an instrument can alter the mood and set an aura to the song and album isn't subjective to those who write music its to those who can understand what effect a sound can bring. some people don't have that knack, whether they play an instrument or not.
>>
>>61296651
You're not special, everyone has that knack.
