While reading music is important, a lot of really great musicians don't read. But that's not to say people should try to learn music without reading it, the percentage of actual musica geniuses who don't know how to read and can just compose music on the fly and have absolute ear are a very small number.

If I look at a painting and I find it beautiful then I like it, I don't need to understand what kind of brush it was painted with or what kind of paints were used.
