There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

lets see what Santa brought you all for Christmas

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

I'm guessing it's the fact that it goes into mic input on your audio interface, again I'm guessing here as it could be a mixer or something else you haven't mentioned? Can you switch your mic input to instrument input? I'm guessing the mic input is set for high output or pre amped mics which are a lot louder than the Volca keys, have you tried turning up the volume on the keys? (I know, but you never know)
What's the reverb is that a spring King or something?

What's all the hate for hardware here?

you need to plug the reverb tank's output into an input with a mic preamp and make sure your phantom power is on (if it has that option)

what audio interface are you using?

What would phantom power help him accomplish? Only mics run off of phantom power.

Also, chances are that reverb already has an output amplifier so he won't need a mic pre anyways.

>>61276909

nvm for some reason I read he had a reverb tank. and yeah what I meant to say was to (if he has a mixer) to plug it into one of the mono inpits that are usually in the same channel as mics, since they have an gain control to boost the signal from "weak" gear. Phantom power is irrelevant though

Well if you're trying to emulate tape wow and flutter, or analog opto-compressors, there's an assload out there to work with and I don't really feel like getting into the details.

If you're after analog synth sounds, you should look to some of the TAL plugins. Keep in mind, most analog synth emulations worth their salt are very processor hungry, so instead of running multiple instances, bounce the project.

The 10.1 is pretty solid, as the synth voice can be broken out to do the individual tasks, but you'll find you will want dedicated VCAs and EGs down the road.

It's also missing multiples, but you can make those on your own if you're handy with an iron.

I'm away from home because Christmas, and I didn't bring the modular, so this is the only pic I have. The module is an Odnes Martenot style expression block with a color changing LED inside. How the fuck do you get better at sound design? Obviously making the same shitty sounds over and over again doesn't make you good at it so how do people learn how to make bass/synth sounds? Just experimentation?
>>
>>61282516
Always start with initialized patches. The worst thing you can do to your sound design abilities is to start with a preset and "tweak" it to get what you want.
>>
https://clyp.it/bulvhbdm

Is this too repetitive? Does it classify as dub?

>>61275996
start with a few chords and add notes that sound harmonious, or that come to mind. Hum a tune that sounds nice with what you've built, that way you don't end up with a dissonant mess, no offense.

>>61280005
I'd make the snare a lot more louder/punchier. Also maybe a doubler on the hihats, If you're working in FL studio this is easily done with fruity stereo shaper and it really enhances the sound and hearability without making it louder.
>>
>>61282516
LFO everything

>>61282573
imo presets are good to reverse engineer
>>
What's better for recording, Ableton or FL Studio?
>>
>>61282662
never used ableton but fl studio worked fine for recording when i used it

if you're just going to be recording and mixing without composing inside the DAW then reaper is the GOAT DAW for that, price and functionality-wise.
>>
>>61282653
Eh. I find it better to start blank, and try to emulate the presets without starting there.
>>
>>61282516
I always do what this >>61282573 anon suggested or more recently just building stuff with blocks in Reaktor.
Personally start with a simple synth like Monark and just use that until you can make lots of different sounds from scratch. Kick drums, snares, hats, pads, bass and lead. Then move onto a synth thats a bit more complex.
>>
>>61282701
for learning synthesis I mean I should be more clear

how to create pads and shit I think presets are nice to understand what is going on within the synth

>>
>>61282436
The Electribe is just about as portable as the MPC. Trading one for the other just means you're gonna spend more time learning a new thing and less time making music. I would say keep the Electribe save up, buy the MPC if you really still want it, and then if you decide you don't need one or the other, you can sell whichever one you don't want.

Really do a lot of research though (when buying gear in general) and see what needs the MPC can meet that the Electribe can't. I talk myself out of buying 90% of gear I don't need by really just making sure I know exactly what I want and what I would be getting out of a piece of gear.
>>
>>61282516
I think a big part of it is just knowing the synth you're using inside and out, knowing what each parameter does and what that sounds like. From there you can start to recognize common sounds in tracks and figure out how to replicate them. Of course, it gets a lot more complicated when you start stacking synths together and drenching them in effects, so it might not be possible to reverse engineer every sound you hear. So yes, once you know what you're doing with the synth, it's all about experimentation.

>>
>>61282959
A doubler functions indeed as two seperate instances, with the lef tor right channel being slightly more delayed than the other creating a directional effect. It functions as a different sort of panning, without reducing the volume in either channel. If the delay is too small or too large it will not sound "right", so it requires some tweaking but it definitely adds some depth to the percussion

Set the MIDI receive channels on the synths and use whatever you want.

And take advantage of the 8 part multitimbral mode on the CZ-1 also. Even if you don't want to play multiple parts, it's good for layering sounds.
>>
>>61286258
Probably cause I use more reverb than is acceptable and I haven't EQ'd anything yet. What I usually do is browse through presets of my reaktor factory library synths and see what I can accomplish by messing around with some of the settings. Not to mention the fuckton of sample packs I have gathered over 8 years.

But thanks bro!

Oh and take a simple song and break it down and see what they have

I like using Alanis Morissettes song Thank U

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOgpT5rEKIU

It starts with a synth arp, and a very light background piano/pad

Then those end and she brings in the rhythm section (Drums, percs, snares, bass) and a guitar

Then those arps and pad come back (a big part of music of any kind, play with your listener)

Next verse brings in more guitar melodies, but relatively the same

Chorus hits again but this time with a higher snare, more percussion, and cymbals

etc etc etc, It's a very simple song so its easy to break down but it sounds nice. Does your song have all that?
>>
>>61289809
Honestly what makes you better as a producer is time, keep trying to figure out what every function on your DAW/preferred software synth is useful for and keep at it as much as you can and your production quality will improve concurrently.

Here's some controversial advice: get the vengeance sample packs. All of them. Browse through the sounds. Don't ever use them as they are, always fuck around with the samples you utilize, slightly. You'd be surprised how much professional electronic artists take from these collections. Get better samples packs too, try new synths. There's so much out there, FM and analog synthesis is the easiest to start with. As long as you don't distribute your music with commercial intent, piracy is practically legal.

That's all of the tips I can think of while I'm tipsy, apologies.
>>
>>61289952
Thanks dude, yeah I feel you. I'm focusing too much on producing a single melody/chords and expecting the magic to happen, rather than making several pieces that all work off each other. Gotta make it dynamic.

The pads are fucking delish. It can get some nice stringy-er sounds too, some pretty good bells, and some OK leads. I did buy the pg controller with it, feels like a waste of cash tho since those things go for 500$ on ebay. Probably will sell and cop an old iPad that can do that and more for significantly less.
>>
>>61289351
Sounds like vinyl static enhanced/compressed and then sequenced, combined with some serious pitch editing, and other sound design tricks. Very nice track, a lot of thought and effort in this.
>>
>>61290110
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dTPcOrm_NSs

Thriller is another great song to learn from, most pop music is simple yet catchy and its all cause of the simplicity of it all

Open with sound effects, has a build up melody with some light rhythm in the back

burst open with the main melody synths

Has a drum roll into the verse which starts with the bass line, some background pianos filling the empty spaces, and more sound effects

All of those stop except the bass line and rhythm and then it brings up background synth pads and a guitar rhythm, and the chorus doesn't actually really burst except it simply adds a flangy guitar thing and transitions with a brass fill.

etc etc etc

after the second chorus it has a break down and enters this really cool spoken part

Idk I'm trying to explain it very simply. It's fun to breakdown songs

>>61290440
