Wtf does that even mean? I can't determine your skill level from a statement like that. 8 years of "regular" guitar playing would mean that you should be able to pick up bass in five minutes or so.

Try learning to play some jazz

Watch your left hand technique. Because the larger frets it's a lot easier to strain your tendons in the left hand when flexing your hand over the lower frets. If you notice your hands are sore after playing then it's time to recheck your technique.
