>>61249950

>>
>>61249950
Revival movements never ever last though. Every year now for the last 3 or so years people are saying "Jungle is finally coming back this year" or something to that affect with another genre but all that happens is a few EPs get released and then nothing else happens for the year.

I personally would prefer if they did what people like Special Request, Head High, Detboi and Ipman do in the sense that they make tracks which obviously contain a lot of old school sounding stuff in them but are still undoubtedly modern sounding.
>>
>>61249991

that is more or less a revival.

>>

>>
>>61250003
A revival would imply releases being released with the sort of regularity that they did when the genres were big. I can assure you more that more Jungle EPs were released in a single year than when the genre was properly popular than all of the revival stuff we've had since it's been dead.
>>

>>
>>61250070

for all intensive purposes that's "dead" m8. Sure it's still being made, but its not popular and I'm going to guess the sound has stagnated
>>
>>61250070
D&B I'll admit is not dead since loads of it is still released. Jungle, not so much, outside one or two labels and maybe a few net labels/online mixes type shit no one really releases Jungle stuff very regularly. Sporadically but not really enough to say the genre is thriving, hence why I reckon it's dead.

Breakbeat Hardcore is the most dead thing out of everything I listen to though.
>>
>>61250119
>the sound has stagnated
That's affected D&B much more since as a whole genre D&B is more 'simple' than Jungle. The Jungle being released now is at times as good as the mid 90s stuff (for example everything Kid Lib and Green Bay Wax and 117 Recs do) but there's just not much of it.

Well if we use your definition of what a 'dead genre' is then only stuff like neolithic music or other prehistoric music will be considered a dead genre, since I mean, fucking ragtime piano and Aztec flute music is still being recorded and released

But since we're talking "dead" as in "fell out of favor/its largely irrelevant to its scene/the sound has stagnated", then you can say X genre is dead even if its still being released ie trance is still being produced and sold and bought yet I doubt anyone in the know would deny that it's pretty much dead as it is an empty shell of what it used to be

hi guys

can you explain something to me?

how do producers and djs (djs especially) actually get "big"

i mean, the difference between say ben ufo and another DJ who just plays a gig every 2 weeks or so in his city and has a day job to cover his shit.

what separates ben ufo from the rest? and i know he runs a label, but other than that. because gizmo runs a label but isn't that prolific as a DJ, same with loefah and i'm sure there's others.

so i've just mentioned DJs so far

but what about producers? how does it work for them?

what's the difference between people like rodhad, blawan etc with other producers who aren't as "big"

what is the difference? what does it take?

is it just dedication to the art/craft? will anyone make it eventually if they put in the right amount of work? or is it something else?

Connections connections CONNECTIONS, next time @ the club try to socialize with dj's promoters label owners and other things like that.

Best /bleep/ conversations i have ever had is with people involved with the scene, from there people will know who you are slowly book you more maby give you a change if you got some banger song on your Soundcloud.

then of-course if you got the skill set and you play 10/10 sets every time it will not take a while before your that "Cool new guy" that everyone in your area wants to book.

the foundations of brostep were laid by ukmen, Nero and Skream. that's besides the point though, grime will never ever be popular in burgerland because a) hip hop already fills that niche b) uk accent sounds like shit to pardners, uk accent+grime = comedy to them, and c)grime is shite. Like even brostep has the appeal of muh wubwub/festival/large crowd thing. There is nothing in grime that appeals to the average american

depends where you are and what social class (uk class divides are enormous)

inner cities - yes absolutely
gradually moving outwards and more into suburbs it gets less popular but generally if you're young and working class you'll be around it out of a cultural inevitability

if you are middle class or not inner city then it isn't so much of a cultural and social activity than an entertainment thing

Not to the same level. Grime has the significant disadvantage of only being around since 02 at the earliest in the type of music that would eventually become Grime, Hip-Hop is older by 3 decades.

I always find myself thinking that popular music in UK goes through peaks and then dies out faster than it does in other places around the world. There was a brief time where Grime was the 'in' music with young people and was everywhere but then it got so big that it imploded on itself and died out with there only now being a (mostly shit) resurgence of it. That happens a lot with genres big in the UK.

Incidentally a big part of why Grime died was that it's MCs and producers started making UK Hip-hop so maybe we could say that it's also popular here, although it was never even close to being as big.
>>
>>61261774
>got so big that it imploded on itself and died out
can you expand? i agree with you totally but i find it hard to pinpoint why

obviously the bigger mc's like wiley dizzee tinchy kano etc all went pop because they saw the money and a way out of ends, but that can't be the only reason
like the genre and culture still went on and people were making tunes, spitting and holding events but just not as much
>>
>>61261414
definitely not true.
ilian tape have their own branded long skins for starters
>>
>>61261819
not that breh but that is p much what happened. everyone did just start making pop tunes. and the mcs that didn't, started moving over UK funky instead of grime as that got popular
>>
>>61259372
not that i have the all the answers as im just starting to build buzz but this is my 2 cents on how to "make it". If i keep going the way there going, i'll be set and achieve my dreams.

From what i know its about:
skill and dedication, taste-making, trend-awareness (not that you have to follow the trends, but being aware of what is in and is out is big) having quality original productions and mixes, so promoters and potential fans can hear that you're not utter shite AND so you're not known as JUST a DJ, you're an artist who is a DJ.

after you've got skills, dedication, taste, trend awareness and quality production and mixes the biggest thing is CONNECTIONS. You literally cant get anywhere in LIFE without connections let alone in the music world. Befriend, club owners, promoters, DJs, producers, engineers, bartenders, dancefloor junkies literally everyone who would be involved in a party. If they like you, they will find out you have skills on their on, NEVER force shit on people. Be friends with them and build relationships, if you got skills word will get to them. Then once you're getting booked regularly and killing it 10/10 each time, put out some proper releases on labels, mixes on magazine and blogs that people care about and just keep working. Its really about connections and work.

i think, idk im just at the stage where im getting decent local buzz and playing out all the time, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

theres already Grime Nights in places like Vancouver, which happened to be one of the first places Dubstep blew up in north america. Im in the prairies of canada and a lot of underground djs, myself included have a few grime tracks in their collections. Its really gonna be a matter of months till the first pardner makes a grime track that blows up. The end has already started for grime, 2016 american grime is going to happen and its going to be more shit than american dubstep ever was.
>>
>>61261819
It's just the way any genre dies out; the underground guys start to become famous, they think they can carry on making the same kind of music they always have done but get more money and recognition for it, then more of them sell out or people who have never been part of the scene starting ripping off the style and getting famous themselves and both of these things turn off long time fans and original heads and they abandon it and move onto something else (like Dubstep in the case of Grime).

The emergence of new genres also help kill off existing ones, as Dubstep started to become the new big thing Grime started becoming less of the in thing to listen to.

Grime also has the added law of "whenever an MC has a child they become totally shit" and that happened a lot since the people who had been MCing since they were 17/18 had started 'growing up' around the time Grime was declining.

Hyperdub is only good for Burials, rest of label is shite

and its not a xmas day surprise EP from Burial so who gives a fuck
>>
>>61262042

screencaped for posterity

I still don't believe it will happen tbqhwy. MAYBE it will happen what happen w/ dubstep (some weird af americanization of grime that has nothing to do with "original" grime)....

is there even space for grime though? rap/memerap seems to be going strong, I can't see how there'd be space for what amounts to be the same genre + funny accents + bantz
>>
>>61262042
It might be alright, who knows.

I think MC B-Live was American or something and he wasn't as terrible as every other Garage MC.

>>
>>61262182
i dont know if americans will rap grime tracks, but i think instrumental grime is only gonna get bigger, and guys like skepta have deff influenced north american artists already.

Someones gonna make a track, call it grime, its gonna blow up, people will copy him also calling their tracks grime, diplo will make a grime track and its gonna be the end. It wont sound like how we think grime sounds, same as how american dubstep sounds nothing like UK dubstep.

Idk if Americans rapping on grime beats will be huge, but its probably already happening given how much people love skepta here. It could get big, but its gonna sound more like Skepta. Think americans copying the grime cadence and lyrical style than accent. And they will call it American Grime or Gryme or something fucking stupid.
>>
>>61261472

same thing with rabit how he used his struggles with being gay as this huge catalyst for his LP lol.

had no idea guy was gay before all these interviews this year.

im guessing MESH is gay as well.
>>
>>61262205
yeah right now theres already a grime influence in the underground, which if grime in america never leaves the underground it could actually be really good and facilitate an entirely new sound inspired by grime. But im still 100% certain diplos gonna make a grime track and its gonna be the end.
>>
>>61262322
Instrumental Grime is the thing which has had the least influence in US, they all just like Skepta's shitty MCing. If they do make instrumentals it will all be the same Trap bollocks that people are trying to pass off for Grime here and now.
>>
>>61262402
in the underground instrumental grime is already being played hard my man. Good underground producers already been making instrumental grime that is deff more grime than trap.

I would say about 2/3rds of Hyperdub's output is pretty shit. And Kode9's album from earlier this year wasn't great, it wasn't shit either though. 05-08 Hyperdub was GOAT, everything after that was a bit hit or miss, more often miss.

dude drugs can fuck you up
yeah my guess is his hearing is shot too. EVENIFUDONTBELIEVE is just so poorly balanced.
>>
>>61264308
Based off of his production history the mixing was intentional but yes i assume that he forces himself to use a lot of mdma in order to get into the rustie-mode. You can tell by his appearence that he should lay off it, i mean the guy has to be what 31, 32?

>>
>>61264751
Im aware im just dissecting whats up with the guy. Makes me rethink all of his music. Makes me feel like hes been under the influence of some sort of speed for every good dancefloor production that we hear out of him. Not to say thats the wrong way to music its just sad because that would turn his signature sound into something entirely insincere.
>>
>>61264842
>its just sad because that would turn his signature sound into something entirely insincere.
no it wouldn't
>>
>>61264842
Better he take a break for a bit than end up going crazy and getting sectioned like Benga did.
>>
>>61264871
Wasnt stating an opinion and i clearly included that getting fucked off of speed isnt the wrong way to make music.
>>
>>61264910
What happened to benga?
>>
>>61264982
http://www.factmag.com/2015/10/02/benga-opens-up-bipolar-schizophrenia/
tl;dr Benga went crazy and ended up getting put in a mental hospital after years of an insane touring schedule and drug abuse, got diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
>>
>>61265013

>>61265091
Don't blame me, that's what the mix is called. Grime doesn't really have any Eski clicks in it anymore unless it's specifically trying to sound old.

Do you even /bleep?

I've spent all day doing my masters work after I realised I've got to submit it in less than 2 weeks and I've barely done anything of it. And I'm fucking on call tomorrow and the weekend after new years. And I've been downloading mixes off WCD. And also pic related. How's sit with you.
>>
>>61245144
I WENT DOWN TO THE PAKI-SHOP TO BUY A LOAF OF BREAD,

I PUT IT ON THE COUNTER AND THIS IS WHAT HE SAID:

"Hip-hop Paki-shop; $2.99"

DON'T LET PAKI-SHOP RIP YOU OFF NEXT TIME
>>
>>61265265
Damn that would have been a sick line desu. Just said Eid cuz I hear it's like the Muslim equivalent of Christmas in terms of celebration?
Sounds fun.
>weekend after new years
Does that mean you have to look after loads of wasters in A&E?
>>
>>61265321
Fuck knows what Eid and Ramadan actually is, I'm a Hindu, we celebrate Diwali but I don't know what or when exactly that is either.

I'm working in psych right now so I'll probably be admitting suicidal people or people who have gotten too high and are psychotic. It's boring as fuck and the nurses don't know much so they'll phone me at three in the morning over inane shit (had one tell me some 16 year old girl with depression swallowed two mouthfuls of shampoo and they were going to send her to A+E and I just said "lolno don't worry about it she'll be fine" and went back to bed). The on-call flat is quite cost though.
>>
>>61265422
>I'm a Hindu
WHOOPS
My bad. I just remember that I asked you if you were Sikh once and you said no. I think Diwali is more of a general Asian thing though?

Ah, sounds cheery.
>quite cost
Is this some new slang I don't know?
>>
>>61265538
That was meant to say quite cosy. I'm heavily sleep deprived, I've been on call for a total of 72 hours (48 hours of them in a row) this week so far). This assignment I'm writing is probably half gibberish.

Diwali is a specific Hindu thing. Lol this is exactly like RE lessons in school where no one knew about Hinduism because, well, literally no one actually knows about Hinduism properly at all.

Also more importantly I've already ran out of stuff to FL, got any (preferrably old) Acid recs?
>>
>>61265603
Ah.

And oh, really, I swear some Muslim kids at the school I work at were talking about Diwali with each other.

Uh... I would definitely check out the Acid Trax compilations on Trax Records. Also I think recently the guy from Altern 8's solo acid project was reissued, but I haven't heard it. Lidell Townsell and Jack Frost are both usually pretty decent for the classic acid sound too.
>>
>>61265653
I'll check some of that shit out. Speaking of Altern 8 did you ever check out their first project, Nexus 21. It's different from their hardcore stuff but still nice.
