WHEN THE SHIT HIT THE FAN IS YOU STILL A FAN

It's Kendrick Lamar's latest album, has some neat jazzy-beats and Kendrick, thus it is praised. imo tbqh it's overhyped.

White people on the internet seem to have fallen in one of two camps:

>#blacklivesmatter
>lol, fuck white people amirite?
>check ur privilege
>i'm ashamed of being white

>if you're white and like this album you're a cuck
>hip-hop? more like nig-hop
>KEK!
>Kendrick is a black supremacist
>CUUUUUUUCK!
>>
probably the most overhyped album of the year. there's not a lot there if you like hip hop, bars, or production. a vanity project created by someone who believes his own press releases

it's also not bad, but i can forgive the reactionaries that want to label it as such
>>

Be murrican

It has great ideas and a few good messages on the revived racial tension in America, but it feels like an overbearing mess at times.

Pros:
Eccentric instrumentation
"Thoughtful" lyrics in a few songs
Has your bangers if you like those
Has your long songs if you like those
Has your calm songs if you like those
Kendrick sounds very confident and in control (except on 'u' lel)
Good effort at combining jazz and rap

Cons:
Thematically, it is not as much of a tight, well-coordinated package as GKMC.

It feels like at times it doesn't know if it wants to be a jam album with political messages or a concept album, closest thing we get to a narrative on here is a conversation with a homeless guy who turns out to be Jesus.

The jazz sections are purposely chaotic but lack symmetry.

The melodies and hooks are unmemorable and often barely there.

The sequencing kills the momentum.

He overuses the "Squeaky Teen Kendrick" voice on an album that isn't about his youth anymore.

The interludes add little to nothing to the album.

Almost hitting the character limit, I'll add some neutrals and the rest of the cons next post

Cons cont.:
With something like GKMC before it, only about five or six tracks really stand out.

Neutrals (doesn't affect the album but uh):

>>61230806
This guy, and everyone else who doesn't like to hear people not taking this album as the second coming of Christ. Boo hoo, babby

This post, >>61230603, describes the fucking annoyance of a fanbase this album has when it comes to talking about it. You have your memers and your stans who probably have never really listened to any of the genres Kendrick

Kendrick reads a poem at the end of every single song. This is a musical choice because it is part of every single fucking song. This becomes overbearing after the first listen. I really don't give a shit, Kendrick, you're acting like this is show-and-tell and we're all supposed to eat this shit up like college philosophy students.

The album isn't particularly innovative.
Common, Q-Tip, The Roots; this whole blending of neo-soul, jazz/funk and rapping has been done and done better since the 90s.

The Tupac interview is too corny. It feels like Kendrick was looking to artificially create that "A-HA!" moment you get when you discover you really love an album, but it's not needed and serves as a detriment. If you listen to the whole thing each album listen, good for you. Also, if any other rapper pulled that out at the end of an album, they would be crucified. But this is Kendrick, so people praise it as emotional and 'insightful.'

it's pretty good tho, guys...

Yeah some anon truly understands Kendricks context and approach, riiiiight. Even journalists who get paid to over analyze everything misunderstand it and could be categorized into that #blacklivesmatter tier of people who like this album.

I dont get why people are hating on this post, i like it. People seem to like telling people their opinion is dumb or wrong rather than taking it for what it is, someones personal opinion and using it to help (or maybe even not help) form their own personal opinion. w/e tho good post, agree with a lot of your points.

It's not even that difficult to understand.
Just hit up genius to fucking analyze it.

>>61230877
Middle heh
>>
>>61231163
>is it autism
Yes
>>
>Someone is legit using the argument "You didn't make it, you'd never understand"
It's like saying 'how about YOU make an album/movie/game, then?'
It's a shitty argument and takes a nonexistent moral high ground that is reserved for autists only...
>>
>>61231207
It's nothing like saying that.
We are only observers. We can never truly understand. Even if you do make something of your own it's not the same as someone else's.
>>
>>61231222
So by that, all reviews of any media are moot because they will never truly understand and don't capture the feeling the artist had?

By that logic, Speeding Bullet To Heaven is an untouchable masterpiece and we'll never understand Cudi's messages.
>>
>>61231222
>We are only observers. We can never truly understand.

i guess we should never have real discussions about anything ever because we don't get it
>>
>>61231254
Just because we can't fully understand something doesn't mean we can't say it's good or bad. we can't however say we fully understand an artists intent. I'm not talking about quality at all. I'm talking about context and meaning.
>>
>>61231254
nice save
>>
>>61231254
Also technically speaking all reviews are moot because there are retards out there who probably think SBtH is actually really good.
>>
>>61231297
Bruh, it seems like you're really reading too much into this album.
It doesn't take a masters degree to see that the album is a reaction to recent tensions in America with Black killings and racist tendencies getting some light again in the media.
There's also some plot about him coming to terms with his newfound fame from GKMC and trying to understand the hood from which he came as he's been obviously corrupted by the rich white culture that loves him so much.
If Kendrick wanted to convey something else, then I guess I actually don't get any of it because that's all I'm seeing.
>>

Nah I just think the racial elements of it are blown way out proportion. I'd rather just remain neutral on what I think he meant than take a side. That's all.
>>
>>61231429
Oh.

Well that makes sense then. I respect your decision.

>>
>>61231626
>>61231636
I still don't get it because "ur too white or not white enough" makes no sense.
Of course it does when it's memed to death, but otherwise I don't understand.
>>
>>61231638
Then what did you mean by hitting up genius?
if depth was subjective what would be the point in reading someone else's analysis of lyrical depth and meaning?
>>

>my dick is black and big
What did he mean by this?
>>
>>61231686
I meant go see it if you have trouble understanding and can't think of any more connections.
The point of reading someone else's analysis of lyrics is to see multiple points of view, not just your own.
Artistic depth and meaning is still subjective, because it can't be measured.
>>
>>61231746
>I wasn't the one who posted the original thing, just letting you now.
Either way with the knowledge of other people's perspective, what do you do with that?
I can see where you're coming from, but I don't see the end goal.

>>61231746
boy you must be a great fucking person to talk about things with
>>
Is it possible for kendrick to write a song without using the words "fuck" or "nigga"?
>>
>>61231840
You can modify your opinion, or simply attempt to understand multiple perspectives.
Either way if you do or don't, it doesn't affect me personally.

>>61231859
I don't know, probably not to you then.
>>
>>61231903
