...did you guys all hate this record like I expect you to? I enjoyed it more than Yellow and Green. It's an exploration of that sound, with just a touch of the old sonics mixed in, and overall much more focused.

That's essentially the argument of any Y&G fan, even though Red and Blue both explore much more complex sounds, imo.
I'd imagine most of the critics who rate it highly are just scared off by Baizley's more abrasive and less up-front vocals. The mixing on Y&G is atrocious in that regard, Baizley can change his style if he wants, but the music and atmosphere suffered because of how up-front he was in that album.
I think I don't mind Purple because they scale back on that aspect a bit, though I do like his old style quite a bit more. I believe Fantano gave Purple an 8, which is a bit bloated, even by his standards.
Essentially, Y&G is more accessible, and critics love something that's equal parts accessible and different.

It still kinda is with buttmetal, though extreme metal will never be fully mainstream just like more experimental form of hip-hop and electronic music never will either. Part of the appeal of metal today is also that it's "outsider" or "underground". there is so much potential, and it has all the right pieces in place, but the genre is just bloated and full of generic bands with the same cliches that is sounds like a gimmick

Hence why the clock is right twice a day. The same can be said about Deathcore, but I'm not about to dive into either genre to dig for "great" albums after wading through the mountains of mediocrity and trash. So I'll wait to see which albums under those genres really start pulling positive reviews and work from those though generally in Djent's case the albums that get rated highly are still trash

The mediocrity of MOST djent bands is what gives it such a poor impression, and all the memes surrounding the style make it worse. I love djent, but it's accessibility is really what makes or breaks it. The stand-out artists/bands are pretty much the only ones worth listening to.
