hey /mu/ I'm getting a Shure SM58. I'm new to microphones and recording in general, I'm wanting to connect the microphone to my pc for recording.

Which is more suitable:
1. (an xlr to USB cable): http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/prosound-microphone-to-usb-lead-a55hz

2. (or a Microphone Impedance Matching Transformer): http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/microphone-matching-transformer-r60wh
Then convert 1/4 inch to 3.5mm: http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/635mm-mono-plug-to-35mm-mono-socket-adapter-rw00a

Looking for cleanest signal / low noise. Any advice greatly appreciated /mu/ friends

if you can spend the money I'd get this:

>>
you probably don't want to hear that you have to buy another thing and double what you're spending, but if you're actually buying a nice microphone and want to record with it then you need to get this >>61176994
and think long and hard about how you're going to expand in the future
i started with a 2i2 but now have a 18i8 and wish i would've just got that immediately (got mine on sale)

Yeah thats a mic pre amp right? I'm looking for cheapest option atm (looking to record some demo's).

Looked at the cheaper option of this:
http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/irig-pre-universal-ios-mic-interface-n54lz
>>
>>61177029

Getting the mic second hand (no xlr cable provided) at £55 GBP
>>
>>61177034
here's another DAC that is more affordable
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/behringer-u-phoria-umc22
the second one isn't as sturdy and doesn't come w/ plugins but it's still better(imho) than the stuff you posted
>>
>>61177045
>£55 GBP
seems like you're getting ripped off
you could get a new one for that price

>>61177034
i'd call what you need an audio interface, not a mic preamp
>>
at that price you should just buy a new sm48 and use the rest for your interface
>>
i wouldn't shell out for a nice mic and then not have a way (or have a really cheapo crappy way) to record with that mic

you're wanting to work backwards, the way i see it
>>
>>61177124
Any links? Can only seem to find the cheapest at £75

Yeah I guess going the interface route is best, thanks for the input on that.

>>61177149
brand new sm48 == sm58 second hand

>>61177191
True, I realise this and know I'll need to buy an interface
>>
>>61177374
shits alot cheaper over in the states m8
you can cop an sm48 for like 40$
>>
>>61177374
yea i'm in the US too, maybe we just have a lot better prices here
>>
>>61177473
>>61177450
Probably due to tax we have to pay (20%)

Looks like I'll get the Focusrite Scarlett Solo and use it also as a DAC that feeds into my amp to my headphones/speakers.

OK committing:

As for cable:
http://www.gear4music.com/PA-DJ-and-Lighting/Fender-75m-Microphone-Cable-Black/JCB

Am I just paying extra for the name or is it higher build quality than say:
http://www.gear4music.com/G4M/XLR-F-XLR-M-Microphone-Cable-6m/12K
Is that xlr cable

Don't get a Shure SM58. They are great for live performances, but for recordings you will want a large diaphragm condenser.
If you are looking to make shitty demos, then cool, do whatever, it doesn't really matter.
Getting a large diaphragm condenser and an interface is the only way to go.
>>
>>61177780
Just get any XLR. Get a cheap one. Scarlett solo was a great choice though.

When you move up to a large diaphragm condenser, your life will improve, trust me.
>>61177835
me.
>>
>>61176930
Get a dac, I have a ur22 and it's great, you can even plug your guitar straight in
>>
>>61176930
what sorta music are you making?
What instruments will you be recording?
>>

Hmm I'm planning on using the mic for death metal vocals (mid to high pitch). Thought that the SM58 was THE standard.

Only reason that invites me to buy the sm58 is reduction in price (£20 of rrp) and availability (can pick up today).

If either of you could recommend a better mic for purpose please do. Thanks for the cable advice, I know about the snake oil sold in headphone aftermarket cables - I'm only concerned with shielding, but from what I understand being balanced it eliminates this problem?
>>
>>61177899
get the 58, you'll just have to learn to use eq.
>>
Cable and Focusrite Scarlett Solo ordered.
Next day delivery, so can test my mic out that I'll be purchasing later.

>>61177947
What do you mean by that?
>>
>>61178092

>>
>>61178228
I know what EQ IS, I'm asking why would I need to do it any more than any other mic when mixing?
>>
>>61177899
SM58 isn't the standard recording mic. It's just a solid, near indestructible live mic. Chances are that 95% or more made are still working. They sound alright.
>>
>>61178504
>Chances are that 95% or more made are still working.
Good to know since I wont be able to test till tomorrow.

Seen a few video's by someone using the SM58 mic doing screams/metalcore vocals, sounded a little mute, but dont know if its just youtube compression.
>>
an sm58 is fine if you have no other mic and you should eq your vocals most of the time anyways
