Why is there only one great gothic/doom metal album, and why is it Paradise Lost's Draconian Times?

Holy shit, I JUST discovered this band out like an hour ago. But I'm listening to the newer stuff of course. Just finished "In Requiem." So far they're pretty much a hybrid between a Scabbia-less Lacuna Coil and Nordland-era Bathory.

That's not Type O Negative

Type O are good but their albums aren't consistent enough imo. They have that "let's fill every single minute of the CD because we can" thing going that's so typical of the 90's

Except you are wrong
Tiamat, My Dying Bride, Moonspell, Novembre and Type O Negative are great too

I discovered it recently and while I didn't love it at first it has really grown on me and became one of my favorite albums

PL described themselves as Sisters of Mercy with Metallica vocals

Meh... my description is more accurate.
Paradise Lost have probably the most bizarre evolution of any band I've ever seen

Out of these I like My Dying Bride the most but I feel like their albums aren't rewarding enough for the time and effort they take to get into. Anathema are good too but they're kind of all over the place.
Try as I might I can't get into Tiamat's Wildhoney. I appreciate their progressive side but a lot of the riffs feel really uninspired and it completely turns me off.

Yeah, Metallica + Sisters of Mercy is the description you see everywhere and it feels really shallow. Who cares if that's what the band describes themselves as?
Hell no. I mean yes, Draconian Times is a hallmark in the genre but come on now. MDB, Anathema, and Katatonia have all turned in some real classics like Turn Loose The Swans, The Silent Enigma, and Brave Murder Day. Hell, even Lacuna Coil gave us Comalies, which is fucking fantastic. And PL? I'd honestly say The Plague Within, Icon, and Gothic are all better than Draconian Times, if not as thoroughly representative of a fusion between gothic rock and heavy metal.
PL album rankings
Draconian Times > Icon > Gothic > Faith Divides us - Death Unites Us > The Plague Within > In Requiem >>> Shades of God > Tragic Idol > One Second > Symbol of Life > Host > Paradise Lost > >>>>> Lost Paradise > Believe in Nothing

This sounds legit. It's like The Silent Enigma but with a more world music vibe to it.
