MTI and this album are good albums for very different reasons. i'm surprised people are praising the album already though, took me some listens to "get it". i feel like ugly mane made an honest release for once. nothing trying to replicate memphis rap, nothing with goofy lyrics, an album that he took pretty seriously and it's pretty good. it's a hip-hop record that took travis's power electronics / noise influences and applied them pretty well. some of the record ends up being goofy (like at the end of SLUGS where he starts just mumbling the hook) but i think that's really just apart of his core personality.

I'm disappointed. But I also didn't love trick dice at first. If you expected MTI 2 with emotional lyrics u thought wrong. Of course if OA is going to be Travis's most open piece of expression it's going to be shrouded in alienation. Which means it WONT be catchy. It WONT sound slick and cool. It's supposed to be brittle and off color. That said I think he still could have pulled off those elements more tastefully considering his skill level. Or maybe I'm just not seeing his vision. But even the parts that do capitalize on melody are lackluster. As of right now 7.5/10

I was disappointed at first until I listened to the whole thing. What I first thought were weirdo noise interludes in between 4 conventional tracks turned out to be some really interesting songs.
Worth the wait? Maybe not, but I think it's a fucking cool release. Very different and refreshing but it doesn't come across as pretentious to me. I can see the vision and having learnt more about LUM since MTI I can see that this is the kind of shit Travis Miller really wanted to make.
