What power pop artists /mu/ would recommend I listen to? I'm not familiar with the genre.

Badfinger
Teenage Fanclub
Blondie
The Cars
>>
Thanks, anon. I'm looking into Badfinger right now.

no problem anon, hope you enjoy it

Does this count? Because if so this is GOAT
>>
>>61104557

It's about as power pop as you can be.

Yes, it counts.
>>
>>61102566
Cheap Trick is not only the best power pop band, but one of the most underrated acts is all of music.

Also
>Raspberries
>Badfinger
>The Nerves
>Shoes
>The Knack
>The Cars
>Blondie
>Sparks
>The Beat
>The Plimsouls
>Harvey Danger
>Fountains of Wayne
>Weezer
>The Exploding Hearts
>>
>>61104930
ALSO
>20/20

Particularly their self titled and "Look Out!"
>>
>>61104930
>sparks
did i miss the skinny tie power pop era that was forgotten or something

also explooding hearts and the nerves are boring
>>
>>61105175
I agree that The Nerves and The Exploding Hearts arent the cream of the crop. And Sparks era between "Terminal Jive" and "Pulling Rabbits Out of a Hat" is new wave/power pop in the same vein as The Cars.
>>
>420/10
>>
>>61105175
By the way, you and I share many passions including Cheap Trick and McCartney's Wings and solo years.
>>
Todd Rundgren—Something/Anything?

Not commonly cited but most roads lead back to Todd here, and he produced Badfinger.

Cheap Trick's first 5 or so albums
Nick Lowe—Jesus of Cool and Labour of Lust
Rockpile—Seconds of Pleasure
anything XTC (also once produced by Todd)

>thinking boring is a legitimate criticism
>>
>>61105318
>Cheap Trick's first 7 studio albums and At Budokan are all amazing

It was after Next Position Please that they really just started sounding soft. Even Lap of Luxury is kind of lame.
>>
>>61105275
I like you

>>61105226
dont even know those albums by name ive never listened to anything past big beat because i dont think i would like it that much

>>61105318
I would call something / anything soft rock
a lot of todd's utopia band albums are power pop with arena rock hairs but it's still good though

xtc arent power pop although they have influenced a lot of power pop bands
nice to see somebody mention Rockpile
>>
the feelies
elvis costello and the attractions are similar but not really power pop
>>
>>61105318
I personally enjoy A Wizard, A True Star more, but you're on the right track.
>>
>>61105368
Have you listened to Rockford by Cheap Trick? It's their album before their last one and it's really good, it's Cheap Trick being CT again. I've seen some people criticize it as "Cheap Trick trying too hard to be Cheap Trick" but meh
>>
>>61105467
My favorite Sparks era is between "Introducing Sparks" and "In Outer Space". It's some of the best new wave you'll ever hear. I highly recommend listening.
>>
>>61105368
>Next Position Please
Another one he produced I forgot about. I've never heard it all the way through, but there's an excellent version of I Can't Take It on Music for Hangovers.

My main complaint with Cheap Trick as time wore on is how the production got steadily more bloated. Dream Police is really overwrought I think, though not bad, and even Heaven Tonight borders on glossy. Their edge softened.

Not all the way through. I'll have to revisit that. Their album "The Latest" was okay. A few catchy songs that sound reminiscent of the "Heaven Tonight" era.

On sort of the same topic, did you listen to the Tinted Window's s/t album? It was awful. You'd hope for much better with talent like James Iha, Adam Schlesinger, and Bun E Carlos.

>arena rock hairs

That's kind of what my credentials for power pop have always been, as I understood it. Pop that doesn't undercut melody with a big sound (e.g. Aerosmith) but makes like it might if they took it a little further.

I think the only reason XTC isn't put in the power pop category (big harsh sounds masking bouncy melodies) is because the general audience resisted them being a pop band for so long (see "This Is Pop").

That's why you gotta seek out their live stuff. There are a lot of good bootlegs and official live releases out there. They've always been screwed around with in the studio.

I was too into the skinny hipster girls in high school. As long as you had long hair and tight pants, they jumped into your lap, I swear.
>>
>>61105658
I love their song Seventeen Candles but the rest I've heard is just McBusted-tier. Do they have anything else like Seventeen Candles?

Kind of a Girl, Dead Serious, and Back with You were good. None of it was bad, just bland in places.

The Undertones

kind of girl dead serious and messing with my head are all great

I might listen to the album again been a while

>Buzzcocks
>The Boys
>The Vapors
>The Jam
>Josie Cotton
>Missing Persons
>The Sounds

Some of the old Rhino "D.I.Y." compilations are REALLY fucking good - UK Pop 1,2 American Power Pop 1+2 and Mass. Ave desu sempai.
>>
Some early UK punk blurs the line between power pop/punk pop/punk, in retrospect. Hell, sometimes I think the Ramones are more power pop than pure punk, but what do I know? Its all great music in the end.

Buzzcocks - Singles Going Steady
Clash - S/T
Vibrators - Pure Mania
Rezillos - Can't Stand the Rezillos
Undertones - anything
Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette
>>
>>61106852
it was though
>>

This is my favorite Cheap Trick album for sure. Also, reminder they rerecorded In Color with Steve Albini and it's awesome.
