How many 2015 Jazz records do you think he heard?
>>
>>61092789
10. I'm a jazz pleb.
>>
I don't have a jazz list but even I know that that shouldn't belong on ANYONE'S jazz list
>>
>fantano says the live pianist is really great
>look up live video
>it's actually really basic garbage
Why does Fantano continue to embarrass himself by reviewing genres he doesn't know anything about? Every time he reviews an electronic album it's embarrassing too.

IMO this Grammy nominee is miles above The Epic

How do you know that? Because someone on /mu/ told you so?

You're essentially saying you can't really think on your own

Post some good 2015 jazz records then instead of making this whiny piece of crap of a thread.
>>
>>61092946
it's le ebin false flag viral marketing that's going on for a few days
>>
>>61092946
I already posted one faggot but sure, since you Epicfags are delusional:
Rudresh - Bird Calls
Vijay Iyer Trio - Break Stuff
Joey Alexander - My Favorite Things
>>
>>61092898
In addition to the other albums posted in this thread, Ibrahim Maloouf's album Red & Black Lights was way better than Le Ebin
>>
>>61093009
I'm not an epicfag, I just don't really keep up with the goings on so all my jazz is at least 2 years old.

>>61092848
i saw the keyboardist to some synth solos on his moog keytar and it was a bit cringey. I did like the double bass guy with his wah pedal tho.
>>
i haven't listened to the album and have no intention of listening to the album because it doesn't interest me in the slightest, but it's pretty well established that fantano has no idea what he's talking about
he's just very good at making it sound like his opinion is well-informed when it's actually no moreso than yours or mine
>>
>>61093009
Is Joey Alexander actually that good?
>>
>>61092867
he literally reviews the same albums every critic reviews. He's not unique. He just memes and teenagers flock to his opinion

I don't personally think Kamasi is all that great of a player, but he plays with some great guys and there's some good shit in this album in general.

Stagnated would be a better choice of words.

Can you link the video? I'm curious to see what synth it was because it would be kinda cool if he was playing a moog liberation.
>>
>>61092848
I saw Kamasi live, and the pianist was actually a 17 year old kid who didn't play on the record

I wonder what percentage of fantanoposting is actually fantano himself

I mean I know he has a big fanbase and people will post about him, but I also know he visits /mu/... he must get bored every now and then and just make a thread to stir shit

After all, no publicity is bad publicity, especially on a board where the things that get the most vitriol are the most popular (death grips, swans, grimes etc)
>>
>>61092789
in a sense hes right making that claim; id wager most people have either only heard that one album, or no jazz at all
>>
>>61093976
you forgot the cringey samples
>>
>>61094124
Including him... Like honestly what other jazz albums do you think he's heard from this year?
>>
>>61094152
Let's be honest though, has anybody in /mu/ actually heard more than 10 releases from this year? With the hundreds that came out this year can you really even say that your jazz list has has any meaning at all if you haven't even heard 10?
>>
>>61094206
why not link and rec some shit instead of sneering like the insufferable wanker you are
>>
>>61094245
You misunderstand me. I've only heard 4 jazz albums from this year. But I don't go around claiming those 4 are the best or claiming that someone else's jazz list isn't real because it doesn't include one of the albums I happen to have heard

Why are you so defensive?
>>
>>61094245
Because its a fantanodrone. There are at least 7 good records that were posted in this thread and they're all available to torrent right now with plenty of seeders. Check them out and then branch out if you like them.

The Epic is not a horrible album, its just really boring and basic compared to many of the other releases this year. I honestly have no idea why its being praised as the best.

I really enjoyed this.
>>
>>61094343
Personally I just saw the album title and steered clear of it. What's even the point of recording an album of jazz standards in 2015?
>>
>>61094343
Then just listen to Giant Steps.
>>
>>61094314
I just listened on Spotify so can't help there.
Maybe rutracker though? And I know it's on Soulseek.
It's a fun as fuck album though. Lot of energy.
>>
>>61094381
>why isn't this 11 year old playing avant-garde shit
>>
>>61094398
I hate this mentality, so just because he's young means I have to be enthusiastic about playing standards? I compare music to music, not age groups to age groups. His age doesn't enter into it, the question is if the music is interesting or not.
>>
>>61094381
There's nothing wrong with playing standards as long as you do something new and interesting with the standard
>>
>>61094419
>this 11 year old has just as much capability for playing avant-garde music as Tim Berne
>>
>>61094426
>>61094432
Okay, so is this album worth listening to out of context of him being a kid? Does he do something interesting with the material?
>>
>>61094440
I think he's a great soloist.
For like the third time listen to Giant Steps.
>>
>>61094449
Okay, will do
>>
It's interesting how The Epic didn't inspire people who love it to look more into Jazz, but instead inspired the people who hated it to re-engage with modern Jazz.
>>
>>61094465
You give too much weight to the opinions of a few mutants, family.
>>
>>61094206
This. It's the blind leading the blind.

Basically you're all dumb.
>>
>>61094449
I listened to his Giant steps, and he's a solid player, and he does what he does well. There's just nothing that interests me at all, technically it's all there, but honestly if a 30 year old was playing like that, you wouldn't think it was worth putting on an album. I'm sure he'll be a great player when he grows up and matures in his playing more.
>>
>>61092789
>listening to Fantano's opinions on jazz
Why would you do that? I stopped watching him entirely after he reviewed the fake Blur album but if you want his opinion on something at least let it be on a genre he knows about.

>>61094465
It's jazz for people who don't like jazz the same way Deafheaven is blackgaze for people who don't like black metal, Macklemore is rap for people who don't like rap, etc. I lump it all under "check out my eccentric taste"core.
>>
>>61092946
Joe fielder - I'm in
Chris Potter - imaginary cities
Zhenya Strigalev - Robin Goodie
Terrence Blanchard - Breathless
Alex Sipiagin - Balance 38-58
Laurent Coq and Walter Smith - The LaFayette Suite

>>61094066
Been consistently disappointed with everything she's released post chapter one.
Always. was just....ugh
She needs to not do any more solo sax stuff. She does a better job with vocals than she does with sax in the first place but she is just plain not a good enough player to pull off a half an hour solo sax performance. There's been very few sax players who can actually keep solo performances consistently interesting.
>>
>>61094672
Yeah it's more the potential that people are excited by.
They're hoping he won't be another Wynton I'm sure.
>>
>>61094771
what? wynton is a fantastic player
>>
>>61094771
Hope all goes well, I usually feel like child prodigies get all their creativity sucked out of them before they are able to bloom, mostly because of getting record deals like these when they're so young. I just hope he's able to have a normal childhood, without pressure from record labels and shit.
>>
>>61094805

You're a long way from home, boy.
>>
>>61094805
Personally I dislike how he's focused so hard on old shit.
But as for whether he's quality or not:
>Jarrett saves his most pointed attacks on the current jazz establishment for Marsalis. "Wynton imitates other people's styles too well," he says. "You can't learn to imitate everyone else without a real deficit. I've never heard anything Wynton played sound like it meant anything at all. Wynton has no voice and no presence. His music sounds like a talented high-school trumpet player to me. He plays things really, really, really badly that you cannot screw up unless you are a bad player. I've felt embarrassed listening to him, and I'm white. Behind his humble speech, there is an incredible arrogance. And for a great black player who talks about the blues - I've never heard Wynton play the blues convincingly, and I'd challenge him to a blues standoff any time. He's jazzy the same way someone who drives a BMW is sporty."
>>
>>61092789
like everyone around here, he probably only listen pre-70's Jazz and Miles Davis

Is the establishment not still convinced he's the messiah? They're all traditionalists over at the Grammys aren't they?
>>
>>61094849
I'd be surprised if Fantano has listened to more than 30 jazz albums in his life from any period of jazz history. Kind of like most of /mu/
>>
>>61094805
>>61094828
Wynton Marsalis is the Kobe Bryant of jazz. Just like Kobe spent his whole career emulating Michael Jordan, not just his game but things down to his mannerisms and body language, Wynton is like the ghosts of a bunch of the greatest trumpet players come back to life to haunt us. Is it "good"? In my opinion yes. But it's not the original.

>>61094936
There is when people who don't listen to jazz start asserting that it's one of the best jazz albums of the decade.
People don't seem to have a problem with rap fans making fun of people for worshiping Macklemore and claiming he's the savior of rap but when jazz fans do it, we're elitist pricks.

Meh, kind of bland. The drumming is pretty solid but there's a hell of a lot of build up without many interesting ideas to back it up. If I saw a local band do this I'd be pretty impressed but there's better stuff out there.
