I'm almost done re-listening to all of their albums (Sainthood being the only one left to listen) and so far The Con and Under Feet Like Ours have been my my least favorite's while I've been loving the other 4. In particular, If It Was You. Jesus, I loved re-listening to it. I dont' remember it being so good my first time listening to it. I think it's their most underrated.

There is no goal. My last two went on for ridiculously long times but I don't think it's best to drag them out for the sake of dragging them out. If we take them all the way into the weekend, then who's even gonna be ready for next Monday? That's the way I see it. They go until they've run their course, and then we start anew next week.

First three albums were four words (UFLO, TBoA, IIWY). Followed by two words (So Jealous, The Con) and then one word (Sainthood, Heartthrob). Following this reasoning, LP8 will be composed of three words. But which three words?

As promised, here it goes.

>favorite song
Divided

This one comes down to the lyrics. Although not my favorite version of the song, it's one of those somber songs in their discography that I can always put on when I'm in a bad place. To me it expresses an interesting state of loneliness and what's more, contemplating that state. It's less about the gloomy sadness of loneliness to me and more about the boredom it can entail sometimes, how to pass the time and go day to day in solitude. Sometimes that's one of the worst parts of it, contemplating how you got there, where you're going in life, and how to pass the time rather than having no one to sleep next to.

>least favorite song
Superstar

The problem with this song is that it simply doesn't do anything for me. There's no melody for me to get into, the lyrics are all over the place, and it essentially has no meaning to me. It's just not memorable to me in any way. That's as simply as I can put it. I will say I like this version better than the one on TBoA.

>favorite song
Frozen

This song highlights one of my favorite things about early T&S, the driving rhythms where drums often took a front seat. It's hard not to sing to this one, particularly the repeated refrain at the end ("It's not far to go / It's not far at all"). It's hard to describe this one other than I can go back and listen at any time.

>least favorite song
Come On

I love this song, but it's one of a few I think was done better on UFLO. This is mainly because of the drums, which kind of lead the tempo of the song. As a drummer, I think the version on UFLO had a stronger backbeat to it, and the more lackadaisical way the song was played on TBoA bothers me a little bit. If you listen to both versions one after the other you'll notice what I mean. Add to it that I think the rim clicks and more acoustic emphasis on the UFLO version are better and I get a version of this song I'm not as crazy about.

Tegan: Don't Confess

As a particularly strong Tegan album, this was difficult, but I have to go with this song. It has a solemn atmosphere to it, reminds me of cold, snowy winter nights in a way. It deals with loneliness again in the lyrics, but what gets me most is the keys that subtly get more prominent as the song goes on. It's another one that's there for me when I need it.

Sara: Want To Be Bad

This is another favorite example of her lyricism for me. Another thing that stands out to me is the driving nature of the song. The marching style snare drum rolls add a certain characteristic to this song that's hard to describe. Definitely an overall favorite on this album.

>least favorite song
Underwater

I know this isn't a popular choice, but I find this to be the overall weakest track on the album. I don't know what it is, maybe the way it's sung. Like with all (or at least most) T&S songs, I love even my least favorites, and this is my pick for IIWY.

Tegan: Where Does The Good Go

This song just might have my favorite chorus, both melodically and lyrically, of any T&S song. Every moment of this song speaks for itself and it serves as a shining example that Tegan can match Sara lyrically when she's on it. This song is very introspective, asking a lot of questions about love and insecurities that come with relationship complications. Most of us can relate to this on any level.

Sara: Downtown

This album always seemed to me like Sara's answer to Tegan's IIWY, and Downtown is one of her shining moments. Being arguably the saddest T&S album, this song, to me, deals a lot with the general malaise of being in an unfamiliar or even hostile environment without much motivation to do anything, something I've always struggled with. Something about the acoustic guitar highlights this mood perfectly.

>least favorite song
Speak Slow

Here's another case of me just kind of having to pick one for the sake of picking one, and Speak Slow is my pick. It's just the song that leaves the least impression on me, simple as that.

Tegan: Dark Come Soon

I said Nineteen last week, but this week I changed my mind. It's Tegan at her most bare bones and honest. What is there to say about this song that the lyrics don't? There's a quiet desperation here with a universal theme. "Hold out for the ones you know will love you." An earnest message that speaks for itself.

Sara: I Was Married

The first T&S song I ever heard the whole way through. I said Floorplan last week, but again I changed my mind. The melody and harmonies of this one are unlike any other I know. It highlights the struggle of fear of persecution and acceptance of who you are (in this case about being gay of course). "Trying to control the pull of one magnet to another." It's got an ethereal beauty to it that hooked me into T&S's music and never let go.

>least favorite song
Are You Ten Years Ago

This is the cop out of all cop outs. I pick this song exclusively because it sounds least like any other song from the album. That's all.

Tegan: Someday

This song resonates with so many T&S fans for a good reason. The lyrics cut very deep for many people. The feelings of inadequacy, the feeling of always having to prove oneself, and holding out for something better are things most of us can relate to, and I can definitely say they do for me. The melody is strong and unforgettable, the drums are powerful, and the harmonies are concise. It's a perfect blend that ends the album on a particularly high note and often leaves me only wanting more.

Sara: Paperback Head

This one is rich in melody and another strong lyrical piece of Sara's. It's one I've always had on repeat and I think it's one of the more underrated songs on the album.

>least favorite song

I had to pick one, I guess. The chorus in this one isn't one of my favorites, even though it is strong in its lyrics.

Tegan: I Was a Fool

This one stuck out to me because it's another example of Tegan's lyricism at some of its best, as well as her knack for writing unforgettable melodies. The piano playing, the chorus, and the harmonies are top notch. This should have been a bigger hit than it was.

Sara: Shock to Your System

I said Now I'm All Messed Up last time, but I changed my mind on this one too. Shock to Your System is probably my favorite song on the whole album, and it bookends the album on a perfect note. While the lyrics are somber, the music doesn't quite reflect it completely. To me it almost feels like it has one foot in sadness and the other in indifference, and it gives the song this airy, dreamlike atmosphere I can't get over. This album is deceptive in a way in that while much of the music is upbeat, the lyrics don't really reflect that same enthusiasm, and I think this song complements that perfectly.

>least favorite song
Closer

I definitely dig this song, but it doesn't particularly stand out as special compared to the rest of the album. I'll choose it as my least favorite.

That took a lot of thought but it was worth it. How do you guys feel about these picks?

That's not true, I do love those songs. Sometimes the big hits just happen to be some of my least favorites from the albums. That's not that weird.

i agree that they tried to make a sad pop album you can dance to but i personally think the lyrics were wayyyy too literal and straight forward for them. especially for Tegan.

>>
Now this is my kind of fucking thread.

>favorite album?
Sainthood. Love The Con and it does have some pretty thrilling highlights, but Sainthood is IMO the most consistent record they've ever made. Not a song on there that isn't great imo.

>least favorite album?
Eh, UFLO/TBOA but that's a cop-out. Not picking from those, probably So Jealous. Something about it feels really... I don't know, quaint and small in its production. Their songwriting has just improved so much since then.

>favorite song?
"Nineteen." Maybe "Where Does the Good Go"

>least favorite song?
Probably "Our Trees." From the post-TBOA albums, Are You Ten Years Ago or Relief Next To Me. AYTYA in particular is a fun little experiment but really just sort of kills the flow of the album for me and is really annoying to listen to after the first few times.

>favorite b-side?
"When You Were Mine" (Prince cover). "Love Type Thing".

>favorite demo?
I dig the "Alligator" demo just because of how different it is. Any of the Sainthood demos are solid.

>favorite live performance(s)?
Love the stuff from The Con era. There are some pretty badass versions of Nineteen that I need to dig up again sometime.

>favorite stage banter?
Man, there was a time when I had watched HUNDREDS upon hundreds of banter vids. Ask me 6 years ago and I would've rattled them off. Now, I can't remember my favorites, sadly.

That's my favorite version too. For similar reasons I don't listen to that song all the time.

>Underwater
>can't say i agree with you on that. it reminded me a little bit of the wiccan folk vibe they had going on in the UFLO days.
I figured I was pretty much alone with this one. Most people seem to want to say Terrible Storm is the worst on this album, but I'll defend that song every time.

>Tegan: Where Does The Good Go
>the transitioning to the chorus is amazing.
Everything is. It's probably top ten all time T&S for me.

>Tegan: Dark Come Soon
>i agree it's definitely a song where Tegan's introspection comes in play beautifully with the lyrics of the song.
agreed

>Are You Ten Years Ago
>i disagree. personally, i like those very few songs on their albums that are inconsistent with the main theme or track progression. another example would be Speak Slow on So Jealous. it's like cleaning your palate during a meal.
This one is always difficult because The Con is my favorite album of theirs. I have to pick something though. My next choice might have actually been Back In Your Head.

>Sara: Paperback Head
>honestly, despite being a fantastic album i would rank Sainthood as one of their lower quality albums and this is an example of why. how Sara sings each verse is kind of annoying to me.

I wasn't crazy about this song at first either. Then it grew on me very fast.

>Sara: Shock to Your System
>this is a top Sara song of the album but i would rank it behind NIAMU and I Run Empty.
I love this one because it's a perfect fit as a closer.

>This album is deceptive in a way in that while much of the music is upbeat, the lyrics don't really reflect that same enthusiasm, and I think this song complements that perfectly.
>i agree that they tried to make a sad pop album you can dance to but i personally think the lyrics were wayyyy too literal and straight forward for them. especially for Tegan.
That seems to be the biggest criticism of Heartthrob aside from those that didn't like the overall stylistic change from Sainthood.
>>
Do you all think Tegan and Sara still has a fandom? Not fans, but like a fandom. Think this thread has a lot of longtime fans who should be familiar with just how devoted their cult of fans were from '05-12. After Sainthood things just went quiet for a while and I think the Heartthrob was pretty alienating for a lot of fans. The music was solid, but they were pretty upfront about being, "We know we'll lose fans; too bad for them." The setlists were mostly Heartthrob and most of the crowd were new fans. I think was killed it for me was the fucking fan club stuff where you'd pay a subscription to get tacky merchandise.

Idk, might just be whining but it honestly did kill a lot of it for me. The idea of "selling out" is stupid, of course, but T+S were my favorite band and meant a lot to me. The sense of community kind of dissipated to me. There used to be a lot of fans on saraandtegan.ca, and that place is dead now...

Yes. The most devoted of us stuck around anyway. Naturally the people who were waiting around with their thumbs in their asses hoping for Plunk to return were disappointed.

This sort of happened with another one of my favorite bands and the most serious fans usually stick around unless the band gives their audience the finger, which didn't happen in their case or T&S's case either. Some people dropped off with Heartthrob, sure. I suppose that happens to any band after a new album. More will come.

The answer to your question though is yes. It's definitely still around.

To the best of my knowledge, they don't have and have never had a fan club that you have to pay a subscription for. You can pay for a kit of little patches and stuff, but that's all just for fun and some fans would like collecting and trading them I guess. The society mailing list is free to join and gives you heads up info about events and stuff, which is more useful anyway.

And I don't think the fandom dissipated, I think it just changed platforms. Forums like saraandtegan.ca aren't really a big thing anymore. The fandom has moved to twitter, tumblr, instagram, reddit, etc.

The influx of new fans has lowered the median age too. If anything has been alienating to me, it's that, and not the actual music of Heartthrob itself. But those are the breaks. I don't hold it against T&S.

I can't say since I started listening to T&S after their nomination for Everything is Awesome but I can definitely see how Sainthood and Heartthrob alienated a lot of fans who associated T&S with indie instead of synths and pop. I can see why you'd think they sold out because they don't/can't do the same events but that's because they're so fucking popular now. It's like you said, the sense of community evaporated, ironically, once they released Closer. I think the main reason I'm so superfan right now is because I started very late with them so I immediately got used to how their sound grew as they did.

I didn't take it that way, that there was nothing T&S about it, especially their current sound is very heavy on the synths and poppy keyboards. To someone who was just starting with T&S, it was strangely normal since I saw they were nominated, didn't listen to their version of Everything is Awesome, and downloaded their discography. I started with And Darling from If It Was You and as I progressed through their albums, Everything is Awesome just seemed natural as compared to the music they were "currently" putting out.

>favorite song Divided
It is a good one but my personal choice is a toss-up between Welcome Home because of how heart-wrenching the lyrics are. Tegan does an amazing job of writing these super dark lyrics that are really in-your-face as opposed to the abstract Sara lyrics (not to say I don't like Sara's lyrics, it's just the directness of Tegan is obviously more apparent).
>superstar least favorite.
Yep, this has no saving grace.

>>61059500
>Frozen favorite song
Driving rhythms... I can get behind that. What I like about Frozen are their harmonies and there's a weird kind of upbeat sound to Frozen. Personally, My Number. Again Tegan's vocals but the lyrical content is a little deeper and if the allegations are true, it's a very painful song.
>Come On least favorite
What, no Superstar again? Although I tend to disagree when people like TBoA renditions better than UFLO, I can agree that Come On is a pretty weak track just based on the sound; it sounds weird.
>>61060432
>Don't Confess favorite song
Unf, everything about this song is amazing. The atmosphere, the guitars, Tegan's voice that seems to glide like silk and Sara's back-up vocals, the lyrical content (I'm not alone no, I'm just on my own), everything really comes together for the end and it's arguably one of their better closing tracks.
>Want to Be Bad
Ehh I like the song but you're not wrong when you say there's an indescribable quality to the song. It's not a banger but it's weirdly catchy. I think what attracts me to this song is how Sara's vocals tend to fluctuate through the song.
>Underwater least favorite song
GET OUT.
but seriously, the lyrics! The lyrics are adorable AF! "I would go to jail with only boys/ just to prove I was as tough as you" and "I'll be writing love songs/ silly banging-knee songs"

>Where Does the Good Go favorite Tegan song and Downtown favorite Sara song
So Jealous is easily the most emotionally charged album in terms of lyrical content and sound. Aside from the lyrics from both Sara and Tegan being super sad, most of their songs aren't super loud, they're generally quiet and give this acoustic late-fall, early-winter vibe of fuck-my-life-sucks, which makes complete sense once you find out that Sara was pretty miserable during the first few months of writing songs.
>Speak Slow least favorite
Personally We Didn't Do It but ehh.
>>61062441
OH BOY THE CON
>Dark Come Soon favorite Tegan song
This is arguably Tegan's best album both lyrically and musically. This song in particular is really gut-punching because of the context. I talked about it in the last thread but basically, her phone plan would activate past 9 PM and she would call this one girl she was into. Despite that relationship going nowhere and Tegan suffering from that fact, she would lay on the floor and cry almost everyday. But in the day, she couldn't wait until she call her, she was waiting and hoping, for the darkness to come soon and quickly.
>I Was Married favorite Sara
It's a beautiful songs shows Sara's depth as a writer.
>Are You Ten Years Ago
I feel like it kind of sounds like Relief Next to Me, Knife Going In, and Like O Like H. There's a dissonant sound in all of them and that's how I tie it all together. Plus I love how Are You Ten Years Ago ends and how the vocals overlap with the heavy drums.

OH BOY SAINTHOOD
>Someday
>This song resonates with so many T&S fans
this alone is description/explanation enough for Someday. your description of the song hits the nail on the head of why this song is so powerful.
>The Cure
I like Tegan's vocals in this one. My choice might be Night Watch but after hearing the Get Along! session, it makes picking a least favorite track on Sainthood terribly difficult.

2/3 I could totally fit Heartthrob in here but ehh.

>I Was a Fool
not my choice but it really is a beautiful song. I remember Tegan saying in an interview that they had nine years of classical piano training and that it was time to put it on a record.
>Shock to Your System
this. fucking. song.
Sara described it as someone going through a really rough time emotionally/romantically ("you're only meant to hurt once in a while/ you're only meant to cry once in a while) and there's this mentor/guardian angel figure saying "get out and live your life".
There's something so poignant about the lyrics that are backed by the synths and the heavy heavy percussion, there's something super powerful about Sara's vocals and the pounding drums in the back. Also the outro with Tegan vocalizing. hot hot heat.
Possibly their best closer. speaking of closer's...
>Closer
I love Closer, almost always puts me in a good mood because it's so infectious. But I can see why you might think it doesn't stand alone very well, and that could be because it's so popular to the point where whenever you hear about T&S from a Top 40 perspective, it's only Closer.

that was fun.
this is a link to the "Shock to Your System" Track by Track. They realized these videos (along or before Heartthrob) to explain the content of the entire album. They're all really interesting, check 'em out.

I get it but consider the following: think of the context Everything is Awesome is used in the Lego Movie (assuming you've seen it of course). Everyone follows this super rigid system where they drink the same things, watch the same TV shows and like the same songs. It's so robotic and automatic and Everything is Awesome is kind an embodiment of that.
>also the whole oscar performance was cringeworthy
>implying that you didn't think it was adorable to see Tegan and Sara dance around on stage
>implying that you didn't think their side hug in the middle of the song wasn't cute AF
I loved it.

yeh i saw the movie, i liked it
but it's kind of a poes' law violation to have T&S do the song with literally NONE of their spirit in it like they were corporatized

as far as the oscars performance they were like reduced to backup singers

totally not what i hoped for their highest profile performance ever..

Good choice

>Driving rhythms... I can get behind that. What I like about Frozen are their harmonies and there's a weird kind of upbeat sound to Frozen. Personally, My Number. Again Tegan's vocals but the lyrical content is a little deeper and if the allegations are true, it's a very painful song.
My Number is another highlight for me, but Frozen has that wordplay. My Number is certainly a sad one thematically, though. Shit those lyrics cut deep.

>What, no Superstar again? Although I tend to disagree when people like TBoA renditions better than UFLO, I can agree that Come On is a pretty weak track just based on the sound; it sounds weird.
I always say Superstar is too cheap to use twice. Come On just isn't that strong to me. Not the TBoA version anyway.

100% agree

>GET OUT.
>but seriously, the lyrics! The lyrics are adorable AF! "I would go to jail with only boys/ just to prove I was as tough as you" and "I'll be writing love songs/ silly banging-knee songs"
I will always stand by this. Underwater rocks but there are just so many better songs on the album.

Definitely agree about the winter feel of the album. Don't Confess always felt that way to me too.

It's certainly up there. The Con and If It Was You may very well stand out as the best Tegan records of the lot.

>this alone is description/explanation enough for Someday. your description of the song hits the nail on the head of why this song is so powerful.

this I can understand. I guess I just took it as me being happy for them because sure, they were auto-tuned and they were a little more than glorified back-singers but they made that Oscars ceremony so memorable; while maybe their "genuine" T&S spirit wasn't it, their energy definitely was.

I was definitely thinking the same thing about their closers. Ever since IIWY they've always been extremely good about what song they close their albums with. Every time. Don't Confess, I Can't Take It, Call It Off, Someday, Shock To Your System. It's all perfect.

It's a really messy sketch of the cover of the Alligators Remix EP. The Toro Y Moi remix is life. I fucking love it.
>>
>>61113941
it's pretty neat, anon. kinda jealous.
Is the Toro y Moi mix your favorite of the Alligator remixes?
I'm keen to VHS/Beta.
>>
>>61114483
Definitely, I love it so much. The only word I can use to describe it is chill. I've been listening to it every time I take a shower as weird as that sounds.
>>
On the topic of remixes, what's your favorite mix from the closer remix ep?
