I love this album, but I really do agree that from a technical and objective perspective, the production values on this are actually pretty shoddy.

The production value is literally the entire record. You take the production style away, you have a completely different album. The focus is supposed to be on the guitar, with the drums far away in the background and the vocals obscured.
It's why the album is a masterpiece.
