There's a severe lack of DAW descriptions in the wiki. If you're good with your tool of choice, consider writing a paragraph about it.

Learn how to get rare lunga memes, why /prod/ucers just wait for someone to make the thread and why I always copy the OP from a dead thread and change some of the words.

Remember to use clyp.it to post your tracks/WIP : posting a clyp.it is just providing sound for a question, posting a soundcloud link is making self-advertisement and the thread doesn't need that.

They aren't that loud, for one.
Alternatively, you can use a delay effect with the delay at 0ms and offset the delay so the thump occupies both ears as opposed to sharing the center with your bass.

Anyone here actually do studio work, or are people here mainly synth and daw enthusiasts
>>
>>61010684

You'll get away with more layers if you give them space spectrally, a little panning won't hurt in that respect too.

The main thing that's happening right now is that the whole thing sounds squashed - there's really obvious pumping going on like a sidechain with the threshold set too low.

At the composition stage you don't need that - add your elements first and then carefully sidechain if you have elements that you can't separate with EQ cuts.
>>
https://clyp.it/vnfhf5jm
Can I get a bit more critique on this?
>>
>>61010763
cool nice to hear from fresh ears

>>61010970
Thanks for the tips, man.
Are there any norms in panning or can I just put higher frequency stuff a little to the left, and bass to the right for instance?
Youre right about the sidechaining, I overdo it every time as a cheap and bad way to keep my tracks somewhat under control when everything starts to get out of hand
>>
>>61011155
oh wait, I just realized if I want to separate tracks playing in the same frequency range, obviously I wouldnt want to pan them in the same direction. So I think I got it?
>>
How do I get an effect to only be active for one "strum"?

Like, I have a guitar part that's mostly G/Gsus2 chords, and after the switch from sus2 back to G, I want that G to have a reverse reverb on it.

The only idea I have is either good timing, like turning the FX loop on for that track just for that note and then turning it off, that way the FX-input would only have the one G chord going in.

Or my other idea was to record the two chords and sequence them, then just have a separate track for the singular G chord and mix them together.

What do, /mu/?
>>
>>61011155

I tend to try to balance frequencies left and right, so if you have two elements occupying the same bands you'd pan one slightly left and the other slightly right - cymbals and percussion you can do the same with too, split some sounds to each side.

Bass frequencies I keep pretty central but if they have a higher frequency content too you could use some M/S to send the higher bands to the sides.
>>
>>61010411
When I practice, I use really slow tempos like 20-30bpm and just increase my notes from like 8th to 16th or something (It depends, I need to do the math for it each time)

It helps with playing in time better and improves accuracy for when you move up to 4th notes and like 80bpm or something, makes falling 'into the pocket' a lot easier/more natural.

For writing, generally between 70 and 120, it depends.
>>
>>61011257
Hmm... you may just have to have good timing. Are you using computer effects or foot pedals?
>>
>>61010684

>>
>>61011257
I usually go for separate tracks and end up using the effects track again later on. automation is probably the most effective and least resource intensive, but Im not so good at managing it
>>
>>61011257

You could use an expander on your send with a frequency-conscious sidechain so it opens more and sends more signal to the effect at a chosen frequency.

A gate used with the same technique could be used to completely exclude all effect send except for your chosen frequency.
>>
>>61011257

Holy shit - I used to have a MR-6/MX-12 combo with the sync box, sold it last year, but didn't realise that you're mostly hardware-based, hence >>61011385 as I expected you to be using a DAW.

I can't remember if the Quadraverb has a filter on the gate's sidechain - does it?
If it does then yeah you could use that to only open on a specific frequency and send to the SPX.

Good work on still using tape too man - I just don't have the space any more to use it although I still have a rack with synths and outboard FX with a patchbay to route stuff when needed.
>>
>>61012915
>filter on the gate's sidechain
I'll be honest that I don't know what that means, my vocabulary/know-how is pretty limited 2bqh

I can explain what I think it means with what I said about the quadraverb to the spx

On the quadraverb the gate setting is basically a trigger based off of input volume, so that it won't output anything until it hits that mark. So if I make a patch with the gate at just below my recording volume, then have an empty effect/no effect preset (so it outputs the dry signal after the gate is triggered), then the dry signal will go to the the spx

So like, I'll go volume pedal (up all the way so no volume) > quadraverb gate patch > spx900

and when that note's about to hit, I'll just press down on the volume pedal so the gate activates.

Is that what you mean by filter on the sidechain? Or by frequency do you mean specific EQ frequencies that trigger the gate?

And yeah, I love using tape. It's tedious at times, but it pretty much forces me to find creative ways to solve problems.

I make a lot of shit. Breakcore and hardcore happen when harder drugs. Dub, experimental bass, stoner shit like that happens. Different settings for producing influence me, I've been taking my laptop places and just producing a lot. Pretty fun fucking about with tempo desu
>>
>>61013575
Could use a grittier kick with more midrange, maybe use a different snare during the breakdown or put some distortion on it. Or a short gate with a fast release to make it smack. As a whole it could use a lot more high range though, it's lacking air. The kick and the bass are also really fighting it out tonally. Either the kick or bass could use more grind so when they play together they complete each other.
>>
So I looked at the pastebin but nothing seemed to help. I play guitar, piano, and can somewhat sing. I want to make my own songs but I can't make a decent drum track to go along with my guitar parts and stuff at all. I listen to all of my favorite bands and attempt to copy their drums but whenever I end up trying to convert it into Mixcraft it only comes out as feeling mechanic. Anyone have ideas or advice for working on this?
>>
>>61010411
120, I usually don't go an higher than 140, even 140 is rare for me nowadays, and when I go below 120 it's because I want a more 'chill' feeling, so I arbitrarily pick a number like 116 or 108.

>>
>>61014392
I've started moving the velocity on hits and stuff and it sounds a bit better but I just can't seem to make drum tracks that mesh well with my guitar parts. Is it because I wrote the guitar parts first? I would post an example but it's so awful I'd really rather not.
>>

https://clyp.it/5otheij2
https://clyp.it/a11yo2qu
>>
>>61013218

Yeah that would work for you, you could just use the volume pedal by itself on the send to get the same effect too.

What I was thinking is this: Dedicated gates and compressors use a sidechain to detect signal input levels - the sidechain isn't part of the audio signal chain it's just there to trigger the device, like an internal send so-to-speak but with no return attached.

Most of these devices have what's called a key input and this is what's used in DAWs when effects are sidechained - the key input is a direct link to the gate or compressor's level detection circuit - its sidechain - and you can plug anything you like into it, so you can use drums to trigger a gate that acts on a vocal or a bass - the commonly-used sidechain stuff everyone talks about.

What most hardware also has is an audio filter attached to this key input, so if you used say a high-pass filter on the sidechain low-frequency notes like kick drums wouldn't trigger it, but something like hi-hats would.
>>
>>61014489

I don't know, what genre is it?

Half of the suff posted here is awful i have posted some awfully bad tracks in thread like these myself
>>
>>61014887
Twinkly math rock kind of stuff. At least those seem to be the types of guitar parts I usually write. I'm pretty new to producing shit in general and making a decent drum track has been one of the main reasons I haven't even finished a track.
>>
>>61014489
I know that struggle well, man. Its just really, really hard to program organic sounding drums. I dont think anything other than experimentation will make you better.
This track is stiff and mechanic sounding in general, which makes it even more difficult. I usually try to record my basic drum beat (kick, snare, a couple of hats) from my keyboard with a click track, then I might arrange it slightly, but I definitely dont quantize. Then I expand on that base loop by just clicking in hits in the midi track. Thats one way to make it less mechanical. Another is to apply swing, Im not familiar with that, never could control/understand it very well

Usually 160-170 since I like DnB, but I 80 is also cool too in general. Nice because you can use some of the parts at either BPM interchangeably.
>>
>>61014939

As well as what >>61014965 said, midi files.

Try to find midi files online (there are good and some really shit resources) and look at the drum parts of the ones that you think nail it. See what they're doing to sound good - are they varying velocities like a live drummer would (I've sometimes found that using left-hand/right-hand visualization of the drum hits works well for fills, even though most drummers try hard to even these out) and listen to what the drums are being accentuated on, like specific guitar phrases, bass guitar phrases for the kicks etc. Timing too - what sounds bang-on in the mix sounds pretty disjointed when solo-d because the drummer is shifting timing to match music that might be slightly behind the beat for looseness or slightly ahead for urgency.

Even picking a genre that you don't play will make you concentrate on the sounds more - for example there are loads of prog rock midi files around that get pretty close to stuff that Phil Collins and Neil Peart do - not soundwise but in terms of their chops.
>>
>>61015618

I just maximized it real quick with a preset I use to show people.

So I quickly recorded some guitar parts and tried to match drums to them but after an hour of trying I couldn't find any combination that worked well. I'll post the guitar track though maybe an example would help me in the future. In fact I'm so bad at recording that I don't think I even recorded my guitar correctly. need a versatile external reverb/delay unit for drums. want to move away from VSTs, as least as much as possible

not necessarily looking for PERFECT sound, just something that is flexible, won't sound like ass and fun to fuck around with

what do you recommend?
>>
>>61020225
I think at 1:14 you should add a couple of hat and snare sequences, to me it feels like the intro should go into something a bit energetic, otherwise I like it.
>>
>>61010411
I start at 145 half-timed almost every time I start a new track. Then I'll adjust it later after I get some sounds down. Sometimes I'll leave it. Probably not a good idea since 145 half-timed would (theoretically) be 72.5 which will fuck DJs up if it ever gets used in a mix. Oh well.

>>61008379
It's either the sample itself or you need to compress it. If your sample is weak from the start, it will most likely always sound weak, no matter what, especially kicks that are only low-end, like yours.
>>
>>61021425
>72.5 which will fuck DJs up if it ever gets used in a mix.

Wat?
>>
>>61021521
Trying to line up two tracks might be hard when one of the tempos isn't a whole number. But honestly, I have no idea how DJing works so I could be completely wrong. I just kind of assumed tracks with a weird tempo would be harder to mix.

I'm wrong, aren't I? The more I think about it, the more wrong it seems.
>>
>>61021652
You're sort of right and sort of wrong. If the DJ were beatmatching by hand then it would make it harder for them, but nowadays computers usually handle beatmatching so the DJ can worry about other things.
>>
>>61021652
Yeah you could just bump the pitch up .5 anyway even if you wanted it to be a round number. Tracks with weird 6 bar phrasing still fuck me up though. I started out DJing and moved into production after a few years. I should probably learn to count beats already since I just use the Serato waveforms to match things up.
>>
>>61021722
>>61021805
I guess I just never really /actually/ thought about it. Makes sense now. Kind of.

Anyway, thoughts on this? I don't listen to progressive house, like, ever, (or any kind of house for that matter) but it's fun to make. This is just a snippet of a remix that is very much still a WIP.

What do I do for vocals in EDM? I can do literally everything but properly put vocals on a track. I can never think of good words to put to my music but I feel like it would really make a huge difference.
>>
So far I've been using Audacity and a preamp / audio interface to record my guitar into Audacity. Drum / bass guitar tracks etc. were made using Tuxguitar -> MIDI export -> play through Logic Fun.
That process is unwieldy and the synthesized instruments sound like crap.

What's a better setup to do all of this? Should I get Cubase? Which version? My laptop is old and shit. How do I VST plugins with this? Do I need additional software?
Also please recommend a microphone for vocals / guitar for around 150 €.

Thanks, I will do that in the future. Wasn't my intention to promote my shit soundcloud.
Any advice on the software I should use or what microphone to get?
>>
>>61027093
>software
Any modern DAW will do, so long as you learn it through and through. A mistake a lot of people make is to not read the manual and go switching between them in hopes the whole process will become significantly easier when it all boils down to workflow. As of now, most producers use FL Studio or Ableton Live, so you can find a lot of tutorials for those on YouTube. Cubase, Logic and Pro Tools are also very popular, especially for recording.

Regarding VSTs, almost all major DAWs support them.

good ideas here, just space them out more so they can be appreciated better.
>>61015684
try compressing the master to reduce dynamics and add an equalizer before to balance everything out and chop out unnecessary frequencies, esp on the snare
>>61015801
sounds pretty good, I'd think about getting more low end freqs if you can to balance the mix a bit more. the gritty edge works well but the dreampop element is a bit unclear, maybe a more complex chord progression would help? Crib a progression from MBV or something

>>61032978
just aim for all your songs to be average 0db when totally finished, mix the album at a lower volume and turn it up when you are all done writing it for the final master
>>
I'm thinking about buying a MIDI keyboard. Budget is 150 €. Should I do it? What size should I get? I'm pretty inexperienced with pianos but i figure i want to learn how to play them better, and have a tool to make backing tracks for my guitar recordings.
Was looking at 61 key ones around 150.
>>
>>61032978

Mastering for a collection of songs is more about normalising the loudness rather than the peaks to obtain a good flow or good contrast between songs - your songs could all peak at 0db and still be wildly different in terms of how loud they sound.

It depends on what your songs are like when viewed as a collection - for example if you want an intense start with some more-calm songs in the middle with a climactic finishing track you'd adjust loudness accordingly.

Best way to be able to understand this is to use a metering plugin that shows loudness as well as peaks - I use NuGen Audio VisLM but a good free version is TT-DR

http://www.dynamicrange.de/es/es/download

This can be used as a plugin but also as an offline analyser so you can load audio files into it to compare their DR rating with your own stuff.
>>
>>61034148
always check for used stuff in your area, midi keyboards and controllers usually dont take that much of a beating in their lifetime

wavelab_meter.png
11 KB, 723x212
>>61034254

I'd also add that most audio editors will have some sort of loudness metering - image related is the meter in Wavelab 6 that shows peaks (instantaneous) in the outer tracks and loudness (usually RMS) in the inner ones, it also has instantaneous and RMS pan meters to show how your stereo image varies.

>>
the vocals are kinda fucked in general, but I think the instrumental has some potential. any tips?

https://clyp.it/g5jxpmaz
>>
>>61034643

Create a mono track in your DAW and monitor that when you're recording - it could be that (since your input is mono) it's only being routed to one channel when you use a stereo track.

Do you hear both left and right channels when you play a stereo audio file through the device?

Go on Craigslist/Kijiji and search 'synth' or 'synthesizer' and see what you can find. If you see one that looks good and is a reasonable price do some research on it, listen to demos on youtube and buy it if you like what you hear. Synths like you're describing aren't hard to come by, really you're just looking for a digital polyphonic synth. I've seen a lot of really cool vintage and obscure poly synths sell for super cheap on Kijiji, take a look around you might find something that's uniquely 'you' for a great price

I vibe with this. Only thing that I think could make it sound better would on the main beat where the synth or whatever goes

"Dun Dundun Dun" it could instead go "Dundun Dundundun Dundun" every third time for some variation and tempo.

Use a manual for Kontakt, otherwise just use youtube

Best way to write a melody is whatever works best for you, everybody is different. Personally, I believe that a melody sounds more natural if it's improvised over a chord progression or even just improvised until it sounds good.
