Yeah I know but I've just never thought of it like that. It's funny because I do think of Sgt Peppers that way, and if there's any album that was a blatant attempt at making another Sgt Peppers it's that one. Maybe it's the lyrics.

>Interest in folk music among the independent artists and crossover bands that dominated much of the underground music scene in the late 1990s led to a revival of psych folk during the following decade, with the New Weird America movement, which also saw the rise of the stylistically similar genre of freak folk. Also, Animal Collective's early albums identify closely with freak folk as does their collaboration with veteran British folk artist Vashti Bunyan,[16] and The Microphones/Mount Eerie,[17] who combine naturalistic elements with lo-fi and psychedelia. Both artists received significant exposure in the indie music scene following critical acclaim from review site Pitchfork Media[18][19][20] and soon more artists began experimenting with the genre, including Grizzly Bear,[21] Devendra Banhart, and Grouper.[22]

>There's no such thing as psychedelic music.

>Psychedelic music (sometimes psychedelia[1]) covers a range of popular music styles and genres influenced by psychedelic culture that attempted to replicate or enhance the psychedelic experiences of psychedelic drugs.
>A number of features are often included in psychedelic music. Exotic instrumentation, with a particular fondness for the sitar and tabla are common.[2] Songs often have more complex song structures, key and time signature changes, modal melodies and drones than contemporary pop music.[3] Surreal, whimsical, esoterically or literary-inspired, lyrics are often used.[4][5] There is often a strong emphasis on extended instrumental solos or jams, typically featuring a heavily distorted electric guitar as the main instrument.[3] Electric guitars are used to create feedback, and are played through wah wah and fuzzbox effect pedals.[6] There is a strong keyboard presence, in the 1960s this especially using electronic organs, harpsichords, or the Mellotron, an early tape-driven 'sampler' keyboard.[7] Elaborate studio effects are often used, such as backwards tapes, panning, phasing, long delay loops, and extreme reverb.[8] In the 1960s there was a use of primitive electronic instruments such as early synthesizers and the theremin.[9][10] Later forms of electronic psychedelia also employed repetitive computer-generated beats.[11]

So literally every piece of music ever written could be described as psychedelic by that definition.

Just face it, psychedelic music is not real.

>surreal, whimsical, esoterically, or literary inspired lyrics

Yep, real descriptive. Clearly a meaningful and specific term applied only to a certain genre of music.

Give me a fucking break. Every song fits into at least one of these categories. Most of them fit into at least 3 or 4.

Riiiiiight, because Rate Your Music knows what's psychedelic and what's not. Rate Your Music must know everything.

Because if it's on Rate Your Music, it must be true.

Most "psychedelic" music isn't either.

Listening to this right now, it's fucking heavenly.
I've never listened to The Flaming Lips before (although I do plan on listening to their discography some time), and this is my second time listening to Neon Indian (currently making my way through his).
Have you guys heard this?

I plan on it, eventually. I hear it's like a perfect album or something, like their magnum opus. So I do look forward to it, and their other stuff as well.

None of the albums in OP's imagine have anything to do with emulating the effects of drugs.
>>
>>60997262
It is, but they have a really varied discography. If you want guitar fuzz pop listen to Priest Driven Ambulance, Hit To The Death, and Transmissions From The Satellite Heart. If you want more psych stuff follow from Soft Bulletin onward
>>60997275
Already heard it. I've been trying to find anything similar to STGSTV because it really doesn't sound like any other psychedelia out there

except they all utilize traits of psychedelic music like distorted guitars or eastern influences for the sake of conciousness expansion

Okay, now I remember why I said what I said earlier. On some levels this thing resembles Sgt Peppers. But psych doesn't do chord changes like this thing does chord changes. Psych singers don't sing like Andy and Colin. Psych guitarists definitely don't play guitar like the solo in Supergirl. This is a new wave album through and through.

What a fucking album though. I love XTC so much.

He even played the solo on supergutl with Eric claptons disraeli gears album guitar, for extra psych authenticity
