It's great because it's a well-written pop song with a catchy hook. What elevates it for me and a lot of other people is the way that it tackles the realism that young, idealistic love rarely works out. It's melancholic and innocent at the same time, almost impossibly.
There's also a lot of romanticism of that time period and it's music, and that probably plays a larger part in it's critical plaudits than most people will admit, but fuck it, you're not gonna change that.

How the lyrics and chords build up and crescendo at the same time. The themes addressed in the lyrics. There's something inherently beautiful about recognizing that we aren't perfect as humans, hence why we can't love eternally. Quite the irony in terms of the song and the men that produced it.
