IMO it's nothing do with the essentials chart, really. Some people research bands independently and discover music from a variety sources, and bring the albums they find to /mu/. Other people only listen to what they see on /mu/ and so we end up talking about the same albums endlessly. Everyone knows the only chance you've got of good discussion about interesting albums is in the /daily/ threads
