like if I talk with a friend who loves Jazz, and they talk about all the intricate stuff in Coleman's Free Jazz, I can't complain. he knows his shit, he actually understands what makes the music great
but when some like, 16 year old on /mu/ talks about the textures in free jazz it makes me want to vomit

Definitely. I make no claims to be any expert in jazz, but having grown up listening to most of the "traditional" artists within the genre, I find it's certainly interesting to identify the idiosyncrasies within free jazz, and trace them back to their roots in music theory and jazz as a whole.

It's like getting into classical: you don't start into the Western canon with Schoenberg, you begin at Bach or some other similar composer, and then build your knowledge to the point where you can fully appreciate later experimental composers
