How long is too long, /mu/?
I'd say 3 hours.
>>60970699
anything above 1 hour
It depends on what you're doing, yeah?
Like Max Richter wrote Sleep which is 8 hours long, but is meant to be played for 8 hours of sleep. So that's a fine length.
But usually for "attentive" music (music meant for appreciating) more than an hour gets pretentious.
Up until you reach the pinnacle of pretentiousness such as Morton Feldman and Kamasi Washington.
>implying brevity is important
The 15 hour ring cycle is good, just never ever listen to die meistersinger.
I don't bother listening to anything below 30 minutes and above 64 minutes.
Name ONE objectively good album that has more than 64 minutes.
Protip: you can't.

That's really drawn out actually.

Trout Mask Replica

Tago Mago
Lateralus
330,003 Crossdressers from Beyond the Rig Veda
Trout Mask Replica
Joe's Garage
It depends on the genre. I think three hours is too long for jazz, but it's not too long for ambient or drone

AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>60970936
>>60970936
A lot of jazz, in fact.
>>60970936
>objectively good
Getting tired of that meme.
Seriously though, the seer.
It depends on the album and how well the content itself fits the length
TPAB, even though I like it a lot, feels much too long at an hour and nineteen minutes, I always start getting really impatient for it to end
But an album like the complete Disintegration Loops can hold my attention for an entire listen-through even though it's over six hours long. I think it has to do with how you feel like you're interacting with the music

Two hours is the longest an album should go. That's about how long a three LPs can fit, and anything above that is absurd.
>>60972271
I'm really not. Look up the definition.
45 min is pretty much all I have the patience for nowadays.
>>60972385
Music can't be pretentious. It's just sound. An artist or listener can attach greater significance than the music actually has but unless the artist is singing about how they're the modern day Beethoven, it isn't pretentious. It's just sound.
>>60970699
honestly i bounce on my baby boy's dick (which is not long enough imo) for hours to this
>>60970936
64 minutes isn't even that long.
And why 64? Why not say an hour? You got a specific album in mind that's 63 minutes long?
>>60973046
Can someone please explain this meme to me?
>>60970699
about halfway through most albums i say fuck it and leave out of boredom..
and this is why vinyl is better than digital
>>60970699
Most people have attention spans of 45 minutes.
anything that can't fit on 1 CD
I don't really like when an album pushes 75 to 80 minutes. I have ADD though so maybe I'm just an attention span-less pleb
>>60970936
Bitches Brew
Doesn't matter to me. I only listen to songs in 30 second chunks, and I skip randomly around the song to find the good parts.
Honestly I'd say anything over 90 minutes is starting to stretch it, not to say there aren't good albums that are that long, but u better know what you're doing if your album is gonna be that long. Otherwise it looks like you're just shit at editing and couldn't cut out enough stuff

This album sucked, not because it was long, but because it was boring
I prefer albums with fewer tracks, but averaging 10-20 minutes each instead of albums with lots of songs under 5 minutes.
