>>60848955
I hate to piss on your chips m8 but thats about the worst thing you could possibly buy. way too cheap, built in speakers, ceramic cartridge, everything that could be wrong with it is wrong with it.
the fact is, assuming you need everything ie record player, amp and speakers, you need to spend about 3 times that amount to get anything worth having, and thats buying 2ndhand. if you went on ebay and spent ~£80 on a record player, £50-60 on an amp and ~£50-60 on speakers, all 2ndhand, you could get a nice little system.
>>
>>60848955
Please listen to >>60849093 or read the 1 star Amazon reviews. Do not do that to yourself. Spend a little more if you insist on buying new and get an lp60. It doesn't have a counterweight but the cartridge is better and the tonearm is already set for most records. As long as you don't plan on listening to any given album tons of times on it you won't damage them before you can upgrade to a better model. The best entry level player imo is the lp120 but that appears to be out of your price range. You'd be better off going to look for second hand turntables honestly. Just read Yelp reviews and check store policies on returns to know where to buy and read guides on Google to know what to look for.

CDs have no merit in today's world. Once you rip them to your computer (and backup somehow) they basically become useless. Although it's still nice to have a CD collection on your shelf.

Records have merit because they offer a different experience to digital. I have a shit load of high quality vinyl rips, and I did my own comparison for one (Nevermind - Nirvana).

It was digital (my own flac CD rip) vs vinyl rip vs vinyl (same pressing/mastering of rip and my vinyl). My turntable is pretty shitty and far worse than the one the vinyl was ripped on but my vinyl came out far ahead. I was kinda disappointed desu because I prefer the ease of all digital but the sound difference was undeniable.

You can get an outboard USB DAC with a better DAC than your CD player for cheaper.

This is why CDs have no merit aside from the initial transfer of data.

>>
>>60850044
theres nothing wrong with the dac it sounds good, its just not as good as my cd player. why should I spend a fortune on new kit I dont need
>its digital
digital things have differences in sound you know, thats why people get offboard dacs in the first place. mobo sound is digital and a lot of it sounds properly shit. if all digital things sounded identical we could all use ancient mp3 players or something
>>
>>60849824
Thanks man, the LP60 is fine for a bit but once you have the cash get your ass a decent turntable.
>>
>>60850170
What's the main difference?
I've ripped a few LPs to my computer with it and they sound amazing.

Is it more of an aesthetic thing?
>>
>>60850130
What I'm saying is that CD players don't have some magic component in them that will make them sound better than all other digital playback methods
>>
>>60849996
comfy 2003
>>
>>60850238
I never said that tho did I, just that theres good sounding digital replay kit and not so good sounding kit. like theres good cd players and not so good cd players. my cd player is good and sounds great and its a hell of a lot better than my mobo sound and its also better than the dac I use to play computer through stereo, though not by the same margin. which is why I often play cds on the cd player in preference to files from the computer rather than just ripping them and leaving them on the shelf. ofc I play stuff off the computer too because Ive dld so much music that I dont have on cd
>>
>>60850203
It doesn't have a counterweight and the weight of the cartridge can't be adjusted. It's fine if you don't use it too often but over time it does wear down on the record. And some records will skip on that turntable that don't have scratches on them. I had a cheap USB turntable and some of my brand new records would skip always in the same spots, but were clean on my new one. And yes it does sound fine, but you will notice the difference as soon as you upgrade.

Been wanting to get into vinyl for a while now and got all this stuff second hand from old family friends. Looking all the stuff up on ebay and such tells me that this is one cheap-ass setup.

Turntable's a JVC AL-A155 and it does not have a counterweight. I'm planning on upgrading eventually, but how many plays will it take for this fucker to completely destroy my records? Is it Crosley tier?

I just got all my gear within the last two weeks, Today I'll run all the cables to a strip behind the pc (also for looks...) and get the floor cleared up.

Are the speakers fine wrt height and separation?
Using the boxes they came in for now, might build some shelving over holiday, just need to decide if I want them on the hearth or the floor.

nah youre good, its not a record eater
it isnt adjustable, but its a P-mount so its set at a sensible tracking weight, I think its 1.5 or 1.75g. it wont wear your records any faster than any other deck so long as your stylus is in good condition
you could even upgrade it if you wanted, audio technica and grado make good quality p mount carts

Make sure the tweeter is at ear height relative to your seating position.

As for separation, you want to sit equidistant from how far apart the speakers are. So if they're 4 feet apart, sit from them.
>>
>>60854484
The thing with Crosleys is that they use ceramic carts, which other than being fixed into the tonearm permanently, they have heavy as fuck tracking force. Moving magnets carts are much much lighter (DJing cartridges are an exception, they're a bit heavy on records).

Vinyl is high-fidelity. Take if from hard-line audio objectivist Peter Aczel.

>The principal determinants of sound quality in a recording produced in the last 60 years or so are the recording venue and the microphones, not the downstream technology. The size and acoustics of the hall, the number and placement of the microphones, the quality and level setting of the microphones will have a much greater influence on the perceived quality of the recording than how the signal was captured—whether on analog tape, digital tape, hard drive, or even direct-to-disk cutter; whether through vacuum-tube or solid-state electronics; whether with 44.1-kHz/16-bit or much higher resolution. The proof of this can be found in some of the classic recordings from the 1950s and 1960s that sound better, more real, more musical, than today’s average super-HD jobs. Lewis Layton, Richard Mohr, Wilma Cozart, Bob Fine, John Culshaw, where are you now that we need you?

Format is WAY down on the list. The most important determinant is indeed how the music was recording/mixed/mastered. Then speakers. Then room acoustics. Then amplification. Then transport.

Even the lowly cassette can sound just as good as a CD on a good playback system, especially through a player that can minimize tape hiss (like a Nakamichi).

Hand wringing over format is futile. As long as your records are clean and not damaged, the differences in fidelity will be inaudible.

Focus more on proper speaker positioning or something.
>>
>>60856003
>As long as your records are clean and not damaged, the differences in fidelity will be inaudible.
That's the thing. They get damaged when they are in use.

>Focus more on proper speaker positioning or something.
Agreed. People should fix their speaker positioning and give their rooms some acoustic treatment before replacing their ancient technology turntables. Only about half of the posters got it right.
>>
Just ignore him
>>
>>60856155
>They get damaged when they are in use.

None of the "damage" will be audible until thousands and thousands of plays. Even then, a better mastered version of the LP version will sound leagues better than than its poorly mastered equivalent.

The primary reason "audiophiles" have a turntable in their setup is because the best mastered versions of countless albums are still on LP, and will probably always be on LP considering the master tapes have probably degraded or are lost, etc.

I take it your criticism is focused at modern vinyl releases, but you usually get a digital version with your purchase anyway.

Doesn't mean you have to use a turntable to listen to it. Just get your hands on a vinyl rip instead.

> The guide-light on the LP-120

I don't get it, how exactly am I supposed to use that light? The cartridge is only lit by it when the arm is on the inside of the record, nowhere near where I cue up a record to start.

Also a quick question - should the cartridge, while playing, be bobbing along the record? Not violently, but the arm itself kinda bobs and weaves but there's no distortion in the sound.

It's a work in progress. The motor on my belt drive of my old Technics table started acting weird so I'm currently replacing the table, the receiver's an old Marantz SR2000, the speakers are some old kenwood shit, I plan on cleaning up all the wires this week. Also santa hat for festivities

Hey so in my setup up I'm having a problem I got a receiver from my dad's house it's from like the 70's and every time the treble is even grazed all audio is either cut off or becomes insanely loud. Do you think it's just a loose wire or if I have to get a new receiver and if so any good ones

It's probably the potentiometer (the dial) bugging out. If your handy with soldering iron you should be able to sort it out yourself, otherwise take it to a hifi repair place, this will probably be cheaper than replacing it.

>>60859288

Nah - the guide light commonly called a target light is for stylus placement. The strobe on the power switch housing is for platter speed.

I hadn't heard (harhar) of Tannoy before, when I was looking for new speakers I had my eye on another set, but after demo'ing them (and liking em a lot) the shopkeeper then switched to these, and the difference was so ridiculous I pretty much bought em on the spot. He also had another bookshelf set that cost almost 3x as much, and the difference between them and these Tannoys was not nearly as big.
Quite a lot of money for me (with amp & cables the total was a little over €1100), but I haven't regretted it for a single moment since I got em a month ago.
