What? I mean, aside from most of the tracks being about Layne's obsession with drugs. Is that enough to qualify it as a concept album?

All of the songs in Dirt are about death in different stages. All of them. The character is the listener. Layne and Jerry bring you down to the depths of your own subconscious.

Very much yes, though Black Hole Sun is not really indicative of the albums songs in terms of songwriting, the themes of dread and despondency hang over pretty much everything.

Undertow has a SLIGHT grunge tinge to it. I still wouldn't call it a grunge album, but pretty much 99% of early 90s rock albums have some elements of grunge in them.

If I were to give it to any Soundgarden album, it wouldn't be that one.

Holy shit just listen to this shit. Wasn't Louder Than Love a phenomenal album?

Alas, this is a tough one, because Badmotorfinger is just spotless. "Room A Thousand Years Wide" and "Slaves & Bulldozers" just can't be touched. And "Holy Water?" Oh my God. It's like they wanted to make a perfect album, and then they did, and no one in the band could care to agree on anything after that; however it didn't matter, because Badmotorfinger was already written by then.
>>
>>60837540
You are completely right and most people disagreeing with you are probably too young to be here (even if they're posting other great albums).
>>
>>60839798
Louder Than Love is incredible, I listen to that all the time. Badmotorfinger is spotless too. But I'm going to agree when people say Superunknown is the one that finally brought it all together.

Every fucking grunge thread starts and ends the same way. Somebody posts either Superunknown, Ten, Dirt or In Utero, then follows it up with "This is the best grunge album". Let's just say he mentions Superunknown like OP did. Then somebody responds with either "No, [Ten, Dirt or In Utero] is better than Superunknown", OR "No, [other good album by band, in this case Badmotorfinger] is better". Then someone else comes in the thread and says "I think [Alice In Chains, Nirvana or Pearl Jam] is a better band than Soundgarden" without any argument.

So, after that initial shit is over with, some egghead walks in and mentions Stone Temple Pilots and proceeds to say "OH STP IS THE BEST GRUNGE BAND" when they're nowhere near as good as them (maybe better at songwriting than Pearl Jam, but musically Pearl Jam is far better). THEN another egghead walks in and mentions Melvins, even though they're a stoner metal band and NOT a grunge band. Just because they gave Kurt his success doesn't make them grunge.

After all of that's said and done, another egghead tries to be contrarian and mentions some other grunge band that's underrated but has no business being compared with the 4 previously mentioned bands, such as Hole, Tad, or Green River. Then some other egghead mentions a band that sounds absolutely nothing like grunge and is completely unrelated to the subject at hand, such as Tool or Green Day, and it pretty much just turns into an alt-rock thread rather than a grunge thread. But that's understandable, because there's barely any grunge albums out there. Nirvana's frontman is dead and they now live on in the Foo Fighters, who fucking blow, Alice In Chains no longer has Layne and are now making mediocre stoner rock with a vocalist who sorta sounds like Layne but doesn't have the same charm or vocal ability as him, Soundgarden are a shell of their former selves, and Pearl Jam just makes shitty radio rock now.

Why do we even have these fucking threads?

I'm not saying YOU'RE saying STP is grunge, but just to clear shit up, they're not. Core, maybe. After that, they were all over the place genre-wise. Only a slim fraction of their catalog falls under the label.

Saying post-Core STP is grunge is as wrong as saying Tool was grunge.

>>
>>60849341

does STP really fall under that label though?

Most of the material you hear on Core, which is what people base the "rip off" accusations on, was completed in 1990, you can hear it on the Mighty Joe Young demo on Youtube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8VROjKDiBs

Scott sounds mostly the same as on the finished product roughly 2 years later.

So I don;t see how they fall under the generally accepted definition of "a subgenre of alternative rock and hard rock that emerged in the mid-1990s as a derivative of grunge, using the sounds and aesthetic of grunge, but with a more commercially accessible tone."

To be honest on Core they sounded more like Led Zeppelin than they did any of their contemporaries.
>>
>>60849713
core is almost completely a post-grunge album if not a grunge album

purple and tiny music are not grunge

after that it's a bit of a combination of the stuff they did on tiny music with grungy flavor
>>
>>60849713
If any 90s band was channelling Zeppelin, it was Soundgarden.
>>
Superunknown or In Utero, /mu/?
>>
>>60849713
Yes

1990-95 was the second wave of grunge with less garage rock and raw punk influence, but instead more hard rock produced pop, this is when STP became relevant
>>
>>60849767

the material on Core is literally some of the "original" grunge. It even pre-dates Temple of the Dog's record let alone Pearl Jam, and was made at about the same AiC's Facelift came out.

But because Core itself wasn't officially released until fall of 92, after PJ and AiC were already more established, people assume STP was ripping them off.

>>60849796

Superunknown

>>60849812

then most of what we call grunge would really fall under post-grunge, right?
