Yeah, but why the 90s all of a sudden? Alternative rock existed long before the 90s.

2nd wave Grunge had a marketable edge

Arena-ready hooks with a facade of authenticity

Well the cold war was over and there was no major conflicts so the Teen hormones had to go somewhere. That is my guess however after Alt Rock what did we get '00 Pop? I think music might be a bit fucked.

People were just ready for it, they wanted that kind of music. Sevral bands like R.E.M and The Replacements, as well as others, were quite succesful and on top of that you had everyone still lusting after the long gone days of punk rock. The 80's were a time of very lush production and extreme commercialism in mainstream music and after ten years of that people were fed up and wanted everything stripped to the bone. Alternative rock filled that void very nicely.

The Smells Like Teen Spirit video was the catalyst.

It came along at the right time to capture the anger and frustration of teenagers worldwide. Suddenly Kurt became the voice of a generation and marketing jews everywhere rubbed their hands in glee and saw the profitablity in alt music.

The rest is history.

and also Phil Hartman is considered a guest star

I should probably explain that a bit. I'm not saying that the artists themselves were inauthentic, they probably believed what they sang etc. When authenticity becomes a selling point, I have to regard it cynically, and it seems like everything about alt-rock's marketing was directed to playing up the authenticity of the artists. Junk-culture/slacker music videos, a perfectly unkempt look, apathetic media persona. Seems disingenuous given how much money was put into some of these acts.

>Phil Hartman
God bless that man, RIP Phil.
