I don't really see Guns N Roses. I think heavy metal sounds so different to Guns N Roses which is pretty much textbook hard rock. Some of Kiss could be called Glam Metal I guess.

Because guns n roses were the people who made 80s Hard Rock sound like 70s heavy metal. We have this sliding scale of heaviness for the line between hard rock and heavy metal, but had GnR popped in even 6 years after Sabbath they would have been the heaviest band on the planet.

No, actually the bands that use this aesthetic usually do it to better reflect the music (and scare away self-conscious wimps, as I said).
Some bands used to do it to pander to teenagers, but ever since being edgy fell out of style they either stopped making that kind of music, or kept doing the same thing but out of genuine love for it.
