Agreed, top 3 are probably Golden Gal, Burgulars, and Bagles in Kiev. Recycling sounds like it could be a great closer, and the rest of the songs are v good as well. Sure, alot of songs use the Boys Latin vocal effect, but that doesn't really make them sound samey if you listen to a few times. It's def gonna be better than ChZ, idk about MPP, can't really compare it to old AnCo

Yeah this is something they've never done before (short, direct "ramones"-like songs) and I think it switches the experimental element from long instrumental intro/interludes/outro's to more experimental song-writing. Not to say I didn't love the droney and spacey stuff they did on past albums

After hearing these, I am 70/30 that I made a mistake preordering and i'm considering canceling it. Not to say some of it wasn't good, i enjoyed lots of moments. But for the most part, this is very sub-par compared to what I expect from them. I want to feel like I didn't make a mistake, but i'm honestly just disappointed.

It feels like with strawberry jam they perfected this new sound they were going for, then just simplified and rehashed it for merriweather post, lazily rehashed it for centipede Hz, and are doing much the same for the new record.

Honestly not sure about this. At first I thought Panda was singing all of it. But when I listen to it on really nice speakers, it sounds like three very distinct voices. Panda to Avey to Geo to Avey. I listen to a LOT of P Bear and feel like I could pick out his various vocal timbres. Definitely leaning towards it being all three. Kinda hope so.

I find it irritating that just because their last three (now 4) albums have been more electronic based that people are all lumping them together in one.
Sure, they make heavy use of synthesizers, but man if you're listening beyond the surface level at all, MPP->CHz is just as different as say Feels->SJ or even STGSTV->DM
Hindsight is a powerful thing people. When a band changes as much as animal collective does, it's easy to look back to their previous work and see how drastic they change, but these changes occur over time. It's a slow evolution. Don't expect to immediately understand it all.

This, this new album doesn't seem like Strawberry Jam at all. I said this in another thread, but people are totally overlooking the instrumentals from what we've heard from PW, and that's understandable since the bitrate on the amazon samples are so low and bad audio quality is certainly a detriment to electronic instrumentation, but it sounds totally different form what they;ve done before. SJ, MPP, CHz, and even PBvsGR had various degrees of a real "organic' quality to them, while PW seems to have a super artificial type feel to it's sound design (probably what that other anon meant in regards to the pc music comparison).

I canceled my pre-order. I still like what i heard mostly, and I know i'll be jamming the album a lot. But it's clear to me, owning no AnCo vinyl at this point, that this isn't the one I'd want to start with, and I wish they could bring back the melody and emotional impact of their previous work.

I've always perceived PBVSGR in union with the visuals that Danny Perez made for the album; they're really unique and totally add this extra quirkiness to the album's vibe

Boys Latin completely stood out when I saw him live in 2014. I was worried that I wouldn't know which track it was when the album came out but it was instantly recognizable. Unfortunately the studio version couldn't even compare to the live experience.

The way he synced his strobes with the chorus of Boys Latin completely overwhelmed my senses. Also the bass at the end of Acid Wash was insane live - just this wave of energy passing through the crowd. and then he played Alsatian Darn for his encore, which instantly elevated it into my top 3 Panda songs, what an incredible ride.

To be honest, I like where they are going with their pop style. I loved all of their electronic albums so far. It's unfair to hate an album just because it's "poppy". They still do a good job at what they do and I think their magic never really disappeared.

I put off CS and HCTI for awhile, and they're both fucking amazing to me now. CS isn't as good as the rest but it's still an AnCo classic. Prospect Hummer is one of my favorites of theirs.

But HCTI is also 10/10. More or less so is Water Curses, FBK, Prospect Hummer, and People.
I mean, I think most hardcore AnCo fans would absolutely love the releases. Thing is, how many fucking bands (especially moderns bands) can pull off releasing THAT much loved material? It's honestly almost weird.
Also, while I've heard some music that sounds like certain eras of AnCo, nothing scratches that same itch. I want to start making music that scratches that same itch, if possible, because I think there needs to be more of it. Like as a fan, I just want to hear more.

How do you guys think the live set up will work for Painting With songs? With Panda behind drums will Avey and Geo be able to handle all the samples and loops on their own for songs as hectic as these or do you think they'll draft Deak for the tour?

Nah, it wasn't. It was just that one King Tubby sample that used to be a lot louder when he'd play Scheherazade live (he still used it on Tomboy but it's really quiet). But it was totally unrelated to MM - they just decided to reuse the sample.

Pre-ordered the deluxe edition with Avey on the cover. Almost went with Geo though.
Listening to those shitty 30sec clips I'm a bit worried that the album is going to be Panda heavy. I love Panda, but we've already gotten so much material from him this year and his songs are usually my least favorite on any given AnCo release. I'm a huge Avey fan, so I hope the songs are more like Floridada.
